Idea #1588: Put Epiphany as the default browser

Description
Unlike Epiphnay, Firefox is not a real GNOME application, even with the enhanced native look which has been introduced by Firefox 3.0.

Epiphany is a very simple browser, more conforming to the spirit of GNOME. Ubuntu should aim for consistency, and Epiphany certainly is a better candidate than Firefox if consistency is the goal.

note:
If you are looser and use firefox browser then for god sake, Shut Up! and don't downvote this idea!

1. Firefox is a GTK+ application.

2. It's loser, not looser.

3. Stop posting your ideas under two accounts.

why are you downvote this idea ?

Epiphany is the default browser of GNOME. It's fact ! So it should be the default browser of ubuntu (ubuntu uses GNOME).

There are a lot of reasons to include firefox. It's -for example- the best known open source browser available. People love it, use it and trust it.

Besides any "hard fact" for choosing firefox as default, people might be annoyed by your attitude. Just show a little respect and people might think about your proposal.

The wonderful thing about building a linux distribution is that you are allowed to do things differently than everyone else. So, just because ephiphany is the default GNOME browser doesn't mean it has to be the default browser in whatever distribution uses GNOME.

Another thought: people are familiar with Firefox. They've generally heard of it, even if they've never used it. If you're switching to Linux, are you going to know you're supposed to use something called Ephiphany, or Konqueror?

Not likely.

Before seeing this thread, I had never heard of Epiphany. Since, for some reason, I have been having trouble with Firefox, Opera, Iceape, and others (slowed down to 'dial-up' speeds) so I figured I'd give this one a shot too. It turns out, I love it! I can't speak about how secure it is (because I don't have any way of knowing) I is several times faster than Firefox in my case. My PC isn't top-of-the-line but it's no POS either. 3Ghz Dual core Athlon, 2GB RAM and a Nvidia 8600GTS and a cable connection.
Epiphany is pretty lightwieght too. It's only using 23MB of RAM wereas FF uses about 80MB RAM. Hell, compiz (which I have running all the time) eats up 90 MB.
Whether or not it becomes the default browser, I'll still use it and I would suggest that everyone at least give it a try. What's the risk? It's free!
Besides, the beauty of open source software is that we are truely free when we use it. Free to try new things. One of the biggest problems I have with the corporate closed-source, propritary world is 'fan-boyism'. That's why things like Windows and IE are as big and terrible as they are. Open source is about true competition. At the same time, it's also about true community, so can we please not be negative towards each other: we're all on the same side here.
