Idea #15715: Add a clock to the screen unlock dialog

Written by Endolith the 17 Nov 08 at 21:51. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
If the screen is locked, the Panel clock is not visible. If you want to know the time and someone else is logged into the computer, you'll have to find a clock somewhere else in your house.

Solution #1: Add a clock to the screen unlock dialog
Written by Endolith the 17 Nov 08 at 21:51.
There should be a clock on the locked screen dialog, too, probably under the login name.

This was in xscreensaver, but is not in the gnome-screensaver, which is supposed to be a replacement.

Here is someone else's mock-up, though I think it could look better than this, and probably include the date, too, depending on your preferences.

On Unix, all user accounts can have their own timezones.

But perhaps it could used the system time in this case.

It should be the timezone for user that locked the computer - works for 99.9% of the cases.

Great idea btw. I have always hated that I must unlock the computer just to see what time it is.

True. I think most people locking their screensaver will be in front of the actual machine, not doing X over a remote server. Do you know what xscreensaver uses for its time display?

I don't know.

I already reported a bug ages ago... http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362809
I hope this finally becomes reality.
+1 from me

Seems too simple to say no to. I like it.

I definitely can see use for this - it's annoying to have to unlock the comp just to see the time.

This will be possible with KDE 4.2 where you can add plasmoids to your screensaver.

Sun Solaris did that. But Gnome locks you out in the cold and does not even give you the time of day...

There could be other information too - anything that is likely to be useful.
