Idea #15570: Wi-Fi neighbour application like OLPC

Written by Eldmannen the 13 Nov 08 at 03:52. Category: Internet & Networking. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
OLPC has a pretty cool Wi-Fi application that shows people around you.

We should have something like that too. It could work with wireless access points, and also with the new wireless ad-hoc mesh network (IEEE 802.11s) which we got support for in kernel 2.6.26.
It could work magically using Avahi (zeroconf).

It would be great in class rooms, for wifipicning, etc.

Cool!!! This would be great for the extremely paranoid.
/just kidding!

Now if I could tell it to find my cat when she got lost... (I found her, thank god *HHUUUUGS kitty*)

Mmmm I don't see the use of this :/ But I'm curious regardless, and if someone cares to explain its use, I would be happy :D

@lifestream xD It's just fun. On the XO, you can see everyone who's near you, start chats with them, share application info, et cetera. I think it'd be cool to be in the mall or someplace, and be able to talk to people around. Maybe you could use it to IM stores in the future. o: haha.

wait a tick. o-o I had way more in that first comment I made. Where'd it go?! I said the code's already there, we just need to put a more ubuntueque front on it. xD

neon lol that's cute :P Oh well, I guess it would be nice to have this app for those who like it. But I owould hope you would walk up to the person and say hi instead! :P

Technology is making people not talk to each other face to face anymore :(
