Nice and clear idea. Exactly what we need!

nandersson wrote on the 3 Nov 08 at 09:10
Why not "I'm Ubuntu" - "I'm human" is too general.

I even think "I'm Linux" would be a better contender. Ppl think that Linux is for geeks, create a video with lots of nice women (like those fine asses that mimics the Ubuntu-logo) :-)

Magnes wrote on the 3 Nov 08 at 09:18
Looking at "I'm PC" ad today I thought that people are just people not some computers, so I think "I'm human" is better.

MrTim wrote on the 3 Nov 08 at 10:25
I think "I'm Human" is a brilliant take on the other's ads. It ties well with the operating being an integral part of life, rather than a feature, as well as the whole "Linux for human beings" thing.

Haha. Somebody ought to do this, officially or unofficially.

I'm Human is best. It says Ubuntu is for everyday people.

I'm Linux would confuse a lot of ppl since they don't know what it is.

People may not know Ubuntu but saying "I'm Human" makes it simple for ppl to understand its easy to use. Something people are looking for in an OS ATM thanks to Vista.

+1 I hate "I'm a PC" ads.... Obviously their not.... So Yea I'M HUMAN ;) Great idea! Canonical should like air one Suberbowl ad or something. (Even though it's kinda wasting some money because that would be expensive.)

There is a room with two white guys.
First guy goes "Hi, I'm a Mac".
Second guy goes "Hi, I'm a PC".

Then a black guy walks in and goes "Hi, I'm Ubuntu".
And the white guys suddenly gets very nervous.

:D :D :D :D :D

nandersson wrote on the 3 Nov 08 at 15:41
@Eldmannen: LOL

I think a great commercial leverages the brand. In this case the brand is "Ubuntu"

That is what Apple is doing right: "I'm a Mac" (Apple brand)

That is what Microsoft is doing wrong: "I'm a PC" (PC is a construction by IBM)

Both "Mac" and "PC" also has a connection to what they actually offer - a computer - there isn't room for interpretation.

"I'm human"

You could sell Good Year-tires for god sake - or canned tomatoes.

I filed the idéa: "Make great use of Ubuntus african origins"

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/14157/

..that idea is about building the Ubuntu brand and create a more "Human" edge towards Mac and PC.

But excluding using the brand in a commercial - I don't belive in it.

The Nelson Mandela interview on Ubuntu is extremely good - think in that direction and make the distro as colorful and strong as its african origins.

"Be human - be Ubuntu"

..that's a slogan I could live with

Maybe even integrate the meaning of "ubuntu" in there somewhere, i.e. show this human person as a very "giving" person. Humanity.

+1 ... absolutely love the idea!

MrTim speaks the truth!

All this talk on having single people representing the OS sorta sucks if you ask me... why not do some clipping with all of the apple ads, showing the PC vs. Mac flame war with the two guys arguing... then here comes a bunch of people (mixed nationalities) "With Linux you're no longer dealing with single people, it's all about the community" - perhaps throw in some Ubuntu philosophy.

Let's make the commercial using only FOSS - just to get all "in your face" :)

stoffel wrote on the 3 Nov 08 at 18:11

Windows does really have some great features. I hate macs but there are good things about them too I suppose. Ubuntu is about co operation and community, not anger and degredation.

@everyone else:

-1 to thinking the suggestion is at all funny, or would in any way be a positive commercial (or image) for Ubuntu.

@ OP:

I would throw my two cents' worth in to say that "We're Human" (or "We are Humanity") would be a better approach than "I'm Human".

I think the concept could have something...

I don't think the whole I'm a Mac I'm a PC I'm Human thing is good for a commercial or anything at all. it's totally worn out.

I just like the slogan I'm Human. Or We're Human. Or We're Only Human. Or Ubuntu: Because We're Only Human? XD I dunno. throwing around ideas..

Then comes Richard Stollman and says "I'm GNU/Linux" 8)

@Eldmannen,

The reason why it's funny is because it taps into the racist stereotype that a 'black dude' is scary. You really have to be black yourself to be able to get away with such a joke. Racism is a bitch. ;)

Now if you could get Obama to be the Human, and McCain and Palin to be the PC and the Mac... that would be something! :D

vs8 wrote on the 4 Nov 08 at 04:38
I think this is very stupid and it's not serious at all. This is Ubuntu, not .Mac or Windows. Apple got it right when they started these ads, Microsoft got it wrong and now the Ubuntu guys do it worse.

This is Linux, we are different, it's ok to be influenced by other companies, but to do the same as they is very dumb.

My Idea is better than this one and more original.

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/14706/

That's better marketing for us.

The slogan is good though, but not for the Apple like ads.

jonaskoelker wrote on the 4 Nov 08 at 08:16
Here's my crazy idea:

Have the "I'm a PC/Mac"-guys (or lookalikes) say there part.
In comes a bunch of kids of different ethnicities, saying "we're all linux".

The PC guy helps a kid sit on his shoulders. "We can run on PCs".

The Mac guy does the same. "Or Macs".

From the left enters a large guy (think Penn Jilette or bigger), does the same "Or on big mainframes".

From the right enters a short guy, maybe even midget-ish. "Or on phones".

All the kids in unison: "we're available in your native language". They take turns in saying a common word (like, say, "hello") in a handful of different languages, while throwing a ball around to indicate turns.

Throwing the ball around still, also passing it to some of the "computers", and having other objects thrown in from off-stage and other objects out. "we share with anybody, and you can share us with everybody".

In comes Mark Shuttleworth. "Hi, I'm Mark Shuttleworth, and I do ubuntu Linux. Try it today for free, from ubuntu.com"

Fade to white, "Linux" in big letters, www.ubuntu.com written below it. In unison: "Linux, computers the way you like it".

Thoughts?

Primož Papič wrote on the 4 Nov 08 at 12:29
I had a "dumb" idea that's similar to some that you propose in above comments, about Ubuntu being represented as woman and do all sorts of things and such...
But I think this I'm human is quite interesting..
I also like the jonaskoelker's idea about little kids, even thought it could look really cheesy and creepy at the same time if not done right (you know adult men and a lot of small kids not something that modern society would get behind).
I did gave this idea +1 and some other ideas proposed in comments deserve to be pondered upon...

chipbennett wrote on the 4 Nov 08 at 19:49
@Eldmannen:

Why would the "white guys" get scared of the "black guy", if not because of racism?

The inference is both implicit and explicit - and equally unwelcome.

vs8 wrote on the 5 Nov 08 at 03:00
This is a little different than the Mac like ideas. jonaskoelker has a very good concept. I like the Mark Shuttleworth line.

Using that, he could also say:
"This is what you can do with Ubuntu" then a showcase of Ubuntu's power with compiz running crazy and a lot of the great apps it has and stuff. This should be very fast, the thing is to catch the people's eyes with the eye candy.

Then the fade to white thing with the word Linux and the Ubuntu site URL. There, people can find out about what Ubuntu really is and what you can do with it.

There could be another ad showcasing Ubuntu's security. Like this:

A safe vault there, just standing there. Then a narrator with a deep voice says, what do you see?... after a few secs... you could see a place where you can store all kinds of valuable things like memories, collectible items, documents money etc. the list could go on and on.

Then the narrator says:

"I see Ubuntu"... unbrakeable security...

Then the word Linux and Ubuntu's site URL routine.

These could be a campaing just showing off Ubuntus strengths in a very quick way.

I'm a Human Being, and I approve this advertising angle.

james2432 wrote on the 5 Nov 08 at 23:59
It's great!

Mac/PC ads: I'm a PC/MAC because I do not have any wiggle room in the development of the operating system

Where as ubuntu/linux: it addresses the matters that people like/dislike and tries to make it even better!

Nition wrote on the 7 Nov 08 at 02:08
This is simple yet brilliant.

To those saying that the "I'm a Mac" ads aren't known worldwide; I think you'd be surprised. They're shown in a lot of countries at least - we have them here in New Zealand.

I think "I'm human" sounds slightly better than "I'm a human."

After introducing the slogan and its contrast to the PC/Mac ads, we need to explain WHY Ubuntu is better for "human beings" as well as the obvious features such as much better security. Showing off the user interface etc.

xfuser4 wrote on the 8 Nov 08 at 15:46
I dislike this idea. Copying the advertisement concept of other companies is mostly a bad idea. It shows that the authors are not really creative and only able to copy things...

HoellP wrote on the 9 Nov 08 at 18:10
@jonaskoeller: Amazing idea and description. I saw the ad totally unfold. There should be as much ethnicities involved as possible to really underline the effect that we all can have our piece of Ubuntu.
I know that's not gonna be popular, but it also should be emphasized that Ubuntu is for free, because not many people know that's possible when it comes to software.

I like the slogan I'm Human, but I don't think it's helpful for Ubuntu if it's used in a similar way as the Mac/Win ads. jonas' idea just gives enough hint so most can connect the dots but is different enough that it doesn't look desperate.

jonaskoelker wrote on the 9 Nov 08 at 19:03
Taking a step back and looking critically at my idea for a commercial: there's no "this is why ubuntu is cool, go use it!" that works well for Joe the Public Plumber.

Localized language? So has all the other OSes, right? Bazaar development model? Who cares about how the OS is made as long as it's good. I don't care how sausages are made, just that they taste good and are only moderately unhealthy ;)

But it's awfully cute; maybe if at the opportune moment it's sprinkled with the voice-over words "Browse, Chat, Create, Share, Enjoy", combined with a brief screencast showing Firefox looking at youtube video, then compiz switching cubeface/deskwall to pidgin, openoffice and some kind of sharing [e.g. pidgin's send-file dialog], then zooming out doing the Expo.

Alternatively, we can have Jono Bacon against a white background playing some metal and growling [something like the Toxicity music video], then saying "Do you like metal? [off-stage horde: YEAHH!!!] Do you like free stuff? [horde: YEAHH!!] Then you're gonna' love Ubuntu Satanic Edition; it's got all the badass red-and-black desktop wall papers with horns and flames and shit that you need while [insert screencast] browsing the interweb, sending mail, writing documents and chatting with band members and other friends . [back to Jono] Get Ubuntu SE, it's free and it rocks [more growling, more metal]".

Ubuntu Satanic Edition endorses Severed Fifth, one of Jono's projects. See http://ubuntusatanic.org/news/ ;)

Primož Papič wrote on the 10 Nov 08 at 17:02
ToIt's funny to see a "satanic" version of Ubuntu that uses Gnome...
On that note, the problem that I see in "Ubuntu" commercial is that again Ubuntu will get all the glory but Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu will be unnoticed.
So the commercial, if will be done, should be done with this in mind...
To represent the possibility that is *Ubuntu.

Squichie wrote on the 11 Nov 08 at 22:50
Im not sure if copying mac is that great of an idea. It would probably just start a fanboy war. Ubuntu should focus on being organic, and appealing to the vege crowd. Mac did the opposite and has marketed itself as aluminum titanium metally etc, appealing to upclass yuppies and fanboys.

anyways, for fun, I drew up this for another idea.
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1915778/ubuntu_ibex/
Imagery I think stands to be allot more powerful than baby music and degregation.

crazyivan wrote on the 12 Nov 08 at 17:37
@Squichie

Organic? Eh? I thought the point of Ubuntu (and more generally open source projects) was that anyone can get it. Anyone can use it. Anyone can contribute and modify it. There are no restrictions imposed on what can be done with it.

Veggies can use it, yuppies can use it, the normal person can use it... you get the idea, ANYONE can use it. This needs to be emphasised in any marketing campaign.

The Mac's got this image of quality, but it's quality you pay a heck of a lot for* and by doing this it kind of eliminates a lot of potential buyers. We need to avoid having too much to do with the Mac from an advertising perspective because it will create preconceptions that Ubuntu may or may not want.

After all, Ubuntu's innards are very well suited to running well on cheap netbook devices aimed squarely at the audience the Mac considers itself to be above. Or at least, it'll run a lot better than XP or Vista. The same netbook devices which are out there, right here, right now, and in the public consciousness. Just waiting to have Windoze nuked off their hard disks and replaced by something Average Joe will like more.

On the other hand, purely due to the savage indictment of the Mac / PC ads, I was amused by "I'm Human" and gave it +1. Irrational? Yeah, but it happens.

*Yeah, I know, a bit rich coming from a Thinkpad owner, but that was my own choice for a number of factors.

Squichie wrote on the 12 Nov 08 at 18:33
Nah, copying mac ads is lame(and I mean its really lame). Lets 'Think Different'~
Mac today largely targets their own audience, which are the soy latte crowd. By doing this, they have incredible reach because these people have the 'cool factor', which in turn influences the people they associate with.

Ubuntu would do better in targetting the "Organic Fair Trade Soy Latte" crowd, as these people are open to change, as long as the change is the right choice. This demographic has incredible reach to untapped demographics such as low income people(I live with social workers), hippies, religious organizations, etc... and because their zeal emphasizes ethics versus mac's superiority complex, they have a reason to be proud of what they stand behind. Windows latest campaign was smart, because instead of doing the obvious thing, which would be to make a mac ad of their own, they instead emphasized that windows is for "Normal Users"(they stood up for the little guy), which not surprisingly brought forth cheer from their users. The mac ads spawn hatred, people really started to feel sorry for pc, and came to resent mac(Like Myself). Lets not follow that path, plus did I mention its HORRIBLY UNORIGINAL!

Lets target, but not bewilder in the process. Yes ubuntu is for everyone(minus oldschool business people/AV People/Gamers - lets be realistic), but how bout we tap the untapped? Organic Fair Trade crowd is cool, they are influential, are likely to stick with the product, and are nice people I would enjoy seeing at ubuntu forums.

Hijack the I'm a PC with

I'm a PC running Ubuntu/Linux.

The commercial makes a false assumption that
all PCs are running M$ windows.

A PC does not "by definition" run M$ windows.

I think it would be great if Canonical would throw
a few mil $ at good TV spots in large metropolitan
markets. That would scare M$ so much more than
even Dell's ads for their Ubuntu Mini 9 netbooks.

The last thing we need is a reason for Ubuntu to be laughed at for such poor taste. Not only is this a worn out joke that really wasn't altogether funny in the first place, the idea itself makes it seem like Ubuntu is just a copy of something that was created years ago.

Ubuntu needs something different, innovative, and far more indicative of what it is really about than some regurgitated cutsie line.
