Description
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntfs#File_compression
Currently Ubuntu reads and writes NTFS compressed files just fine, but there is no way to compress/uncompress them. Compression files can prevent partition resizing, and alone for that being able to set it in Ubuntu would be helpful.

Ah, so it seems the implementation of NTFS supports compression but there is no user-space tool to use the functionality.
A functionality needed in the NTFS implementation is EFS though, for encryption.

@Emacs23 yes it is needed, and moreover I gave you at least one reason for it - you cannot resize a compressed partition, hence it may be useful if you want to make room for your new linux partion. That said - FS compression is useful, there are plenty people who do not have big enough hdds, and sadly none of the Linux FS support it properly... well, the new RFS does, but it is kind of in limbo...

@Emacs23 and what if I want to use NTFS, which by the way is a pretty good FS, without Windows? Consider the case of an external HDD moved about or a large Flash card you don't want eFAT on and you'll see why this is needed.
