Idea #14337: blur (reducing contrast) of the background of a transparent object

Written by yzarc the 12 Oct 08 at 19:49. Related project: Compiz. Status: New
Rationale
transparent objects are very nice and it's always present in mockups end new themes. Unfortunately, when we are using transparency, the text in the foreground is often messed with the background(part that would be hidden if the actual element was not transparent). Sometime it's impossible to understand what there is.
it can be solved by reducing the contrast or blurring the background (only under the transparent part). my suggestion is include wherever the transparency is used the option to blur the background on compiz. even more sophisticated effects can be taken to blur.

You can already do this with Compiz Fusion. In this screenshot, I have it blur and reduce the saturation.

how?

There's a setting in there called blur alpha or blur transparency. I'll have more specific details when I get back to my own computer.

ok, I found it. its called blur windows, it's not so clear how to use it, but works well.
so I think this idea can be set as done :). sorry.

Whoa! Thanks for pointing that out. I've been looking for a way to do that for awhile. I messed around with Blur Windows a bit but couldn't figure out what it was. Maybe this idea should be renamed to "make Compiz effects less vague and confusing." :)

I agree, compiz deserves a very nice config tool. with explanations and easier to understand. some of these feature are splited e.g the cube:active the cube, motion of the cube, reflection and distortion of the cube and how many faces the cube has, are in different places :(

+1, just like Windows Vista Aero.

@yzarc: I agree completely. It makes no sense to me that Rotate Cube is listed under "Desktop," Cube Reflection is listed under "Effects," and Cube Caps is listed under "Utility." Similarly, why is Enhanced Zoom Desktop listed under "Accessibility" while Zoom Desktop is listed under "Uncategorized" ? Their functionality is almost identical.

Different add-ons that provide the same functionality should be listed in the same category (with radio buttons to select between them, not check boxes) and add-ons that depend on bigger add-ons should be listed with check boxes under their parent add-on. Just my two cents.

But back to the task at hand... I know brainstorm isn't supposed to be a help forum, but I still can't figure out how to use Blur Windows. Could someone help me set it up so that only the area behind transparencies are blurred?

Got it figured out. Any translucent window that should have a blur behind it should be listed in Alpha Blur Windows. For example, "title=Terminal | type=DropDownMenu | type=popupmenu"
