Idea #14302: recognize Ubuntu eee as official derivative

Written by Xfactor the 11 Oct 08 at 17:35. Category: Marketing. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Recognize "ubuntu eee" as a derivative. 'Ubuntu eee' for the eeepc of Asus is really a linux for humans.

Easy, fast and reliable. Even my mom can compute with this os. I love it.

They have automaticaly set the wlan driver for the eeepc and the default Ubuntu doesn't. So they really have something to offer.

The Ubuntu eee project really can contribute to your efforts of making Ubuntu popular, because many people want to buy or have a eeepc.

It is so much better than that Xandros os that was installed on my eeepc 900.

I'm not sure we should be officially supporting distro's that only work on a single piece of hardware actually.

glotz, that's just the interface, Netbook Remix.
Auzy, Ubuntu Eee is looking to support all Netbooks and is almost at it's goal :)

Jon,

I was shocked and dismayed after I read the e-mail from Canonical.

Why don't they make you a full-blown sponsored project, and hire you with a living wage!!!

I Love the circle of friends eee logo, and your world class home page: http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/

THIS, my dear friend; is what prompted me to make a SUBSTANTIAL DONATION -- WITHOUT, MIND YOU -- WITHOUT EVEN INSTALLING THE SYSTEM AND TEST DRIVING IT !!!

Canonical would be remiss, derelict in their duties and utterly foolish TO FAIL to beat down your door -- Contractually offer you Substantial Compensation, Legalize, Legitimize and Officially Promote your movement.

Why?

Because of your clear and concise mission statement, your innate understanding of widening your scope -- with precision I might add -- and the common-sense entrepreneurial acumen which you Prove by watching your own trends.

Also, The Honesty and TRUE Transparency of your financials.

Gee, how many Eee PCs are paid for and operating right now??!!!

Um, I don't have those numbers in front of me at the moment; but it doesn't take an MBA to see the industry running at breakneck speed to offer a similar product. Almost everyone has a very special place in their heart for the group, company, product and/or movement that took the risk, successfully created a new market, and fulfilled a dire and desperate need.

Enough said.

Please feel free to post, forward or send this communique anywhere or to anyone within or without 'the company', the community and/or 'the movement' as you see fit -- as it serves as my introduction to the above said parties.

Up until this point, I have been a silent observer.

However, I cannot in clear conscience, sit back and let anyone or anything take the wind out of the sails of ubuntu-eee.

Onward To Perfection !!!

Oh! blame not the bard

Sincerely,

Burt A. Bialozynski
End User

Well, back to comments that aren't copy and pasted.

Alternate idea:
There is no reason why the changes made to 'eee-buntu' or what-have-you couldn't be folded into Ubuntu proper as a modifying package, so that two seperate distros don't have to live for it. And then as time passes and more support for netbooks in general comes about, fold them into the 'eee-buntu' and make a 'Ubuntu Netbooks' distro.

No reason why the good work done already can't be incorporated... I rather like the idea of a netbook, with how accessible the net is getting these days.

AndrewLuecke wrote on the 27 Oct 08 at 01:36
@ramvi, as mentioned, ubuntu should be able to run on netbooks anyway. And this is best done by merging the ubuntu eee patches back into ubuntu. Not by having a derivative.

Having it as a separate project is useful, as sometimes Ubuntu does not configure network connections correctly on initial installation, so getting the "ubuntu-eee" package is not feasible.

Also, there's just something about having a turnkey solution which puts a working OS on your netbook with as least fuss as possible.
