Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Laptops are stolen, you cannot do much about that, but you can improve its chances of being recovered with the advanced security/monitor system, a "lojack"-type system built on open source tools.

1. Most laptops are stolen by the person you know/seen. Most new laptops come with a camera, you can take advantage of the camera to take snapshots of the thief and upload it to some server.
2. take advantage of google geo location feature to see where the laptop is... need a guest account to convince the thief to connect the computer to the internet.
3. security feature should be off when you're using the computer (authorized login). And on when it is in the screen saver mode.

hope this idea picks up..

That's not a bad Idea, but I would be very hard to do. The best way to do this would be to create a program.

Its a great idea. Why are there so many negative votes? It would be an option of course, maybe during install or like above poster said as a program.

Vote it up, just because it gets made doesn't mean you have to use it. There are literally hundreds of laptops stolen daily in the USA. If ubuntu means that your's is more likely to get recovered then thats a plus for the os.

Also, my sis's laptop got stolen a while back (it was mac powerbook). Provide theifs with some recourse and give owners the ability to recover their notebooks!

Sounds like a great SourceForge project. Start it up there, and let the community work it.

I'm not so convinced. It's probably the kind of very good ideas that may come out from such a brainstorming; however, I don't really see how it might work. You have several problems here. (i) recover the laptop when it is stolen, (ii) prevent the theft to use the laptop.

I think (ii) can be already achieved with the classical Ubuntu: you put a password to the BIOS, with the boot order set to the hard drive first, and then it is difficult to login (well, actually it is possible, but one really have to know Linux boot to do so). If it is too safe, then you increase the risk for the user to forget a password and to get stuck with his own laptop.

So, the idea is probably more related to (i). In any case, you have to hope that the theft will try to use the laptop directly, and not to reformat everything as soon as possible to "clean" the laptop. Then you need a server on which your laptop connects automatically and send some information: the IP, download some important files you were afraid of losing, etc. Imagine an option that can "burn" the laptop (at least the OS), then you are in situation (i). But I hardly see any way to improve the rate of recovery of the laptop. Of course, with some IP information, you can locate an area, and then study the frequency of the connexion, and if it's in a public place, go there and try to find your laptop back... and what? Steal it back? I don't know in which country you are living, but in mine, cops won't give a shit about such poor information (and such a poor "criminality" business anyway). I think I see your point, but it looks tremendously difficult to achieve any efficiency in that.

in Portugal, a guy that was robbed a phone and mp3 player, found the thief on hi5.com. The police pretended to be a women, and caught the guy.

Its the internet baby. its huge and people are plain stupid using it.
