I was thinking that this feature would be more an accessory than an integral part of the system.
(By the way, it should not be set to "on" by default. Maybe you change the settings to "on" in System-->Preferences-->Sessions)
This is how it could go:
You set it to "on".
You set it to how frequently it displays (e.g. day, week, month, etc).
Every time you log on, it check to see whether you are due for a dose of the Ubuntu news.
If so, a small Firefox window shows up with a list of links(and descriptions of the content) to the most recent news (say, on 'The Fridge')
This way you could keep in touch with the latest Ubuntu news with the ease of automation.
I would enjoy this because it's fun to see where Ubuntu is headed. And you could just 'skim the headlines' to keep up to date with the community.
Also, if there was a really serious security threat, or something along those lines, someone with the correct authority could easily post a warning of it on the 'Urgent News' section.
