Idea #14157: Make great use of Ubuntus African origins in overall impression

Written by nandersson the 7 Oct 08 at 07:13. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
My suggestion is that Ubuntu doesn't diverge from it's African origins trying to mimic Windows Vista or Mac OS X in look and style.

As a guy from IBM said "Don't copy Vista!" - we have to do better, much better.

Ok, so Ubuntu is "brown" and it's a hard color to work with - but it also represents earth/tierra - humanity - the African soil - protect the earth.

I hope that Ubuntu hang on to those core values and makes them shine through in the Ubuntu OS as well as throughout Canonical.

By emphasizing those values Ubuntu can create a real sharp edge. Vista/Mac OS X is NOTHING like that.

I would suggest you to run a Google image search for "African art" and you'll get tons of nice examples.

Does Ubuntu really stands for Humanity? Well - let it show - let it shine!

Green represents the earth too though (plants and trees), is unused by other main OS's, and is a lot easier to work with

Well, Green is used by OpenSUSE http://www.opensuse.org/en/

+ I think that Ubuntus core values, logo and such is actually pretty good - they just need great artwork.

Ok, brown isn't my favourite colour - but at least it isn't used by other distros - and makes it a challenge for the artist.

The future looks good though - when the biggest complain you have on a operating system is "wrong color" - you know your up to something :)

Yesterday I tried the 3G support in Intrepid - and it justs works - it's brilliant!

+100 for this idea!

I've been saying that for a long time! Ubuntu should not be hiding its core values and identity. It should provide a nice desktop influenced by its African roots without being afraid of, for example, using brown in its default desktop theme, while letting the user customize the colours within the theme.

@nandersson: THANK YOU! =) +infinite! =)

I knew posting information, even having the risk on being so undervoted like -8, could motivate interesting ideas like yours! Thank you again, and keep posting brilliant ideas like this! =)

Africa has a deep artistic cultural background can really set a huge difference on Ubuntu! =)

About brown color.
from http://psychology.about.com/od/sensationandperception/a/color_brown.htm

Color Psychology - Reactions to Brown

* Brown is a natural color that evokes a sense of strength and reliability.

* Brown can also create feelings of sadness and isolation.

* Brown brings to mind feeling of warmth, comfort, and security. It is often described as natural, down-to-earth, and conventional, but brown can also be sophisticated.

Maybe there should be an alternate official theme in Blue
http://psychology.about.com/od/sensationandperception/a/color_blue.htm

The Color Psychology of Blue

* Blue is described as a FAVORITE COLOR BY MANY PEOPLE and is the color most preferred by men.

* Blue calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly.

* Blue can also create feelings of sadness or aloofness.

* Blue is often used to decorate offices because research has shown that PEOPLE ARE MORE PRODUCTIVE in blue rooms.

* Blue is one of the most popular colors, but it is one of the least appetizing. Some weight loss plans even recommend eating your food off of a blue plate. Blue rarely occurs naturally in food aside from blueberries and some plums. Also, humans are geared to avoid foods that are poisonous and blue coloring in food is often a sign of spoilage or poison.

* Blue can also lower the pulse rate and body temperature.

* Consider how blue is used in language: blue moon, blue Monday, blue blood, the blues, and blue ribbon.

Where is all the brown? Ubuntu is primarily orange, not brown, even if some elements are. I voted +1 though because I really like the idea of making it feel like a truly "human" desktop.

The brown appearance of the early Ubuntu versions were a main reason for me to notice this distro in the first place. I'm a huge fan of the dark warm effect and I totally love your idea. I think we (and Canonical) should really be proud of what you called the African heritage. This is what separates Ubuntu from every other OS out there. It's not just technical, it's also a value.
