Idea #14077: rename visual

Written by nakul the 4 Oct 08 at 21:20. Related project: GStreamer. Status: New
Rationale
in ubuntu 8.10 there are new visual installed they should be renamed to only the adjective signifying their characteristic

for example rename should be
libvisual infinite plugin plugin v0.1-> infinite

small polish like this go long way in making ubuntu reach the goal of matching os-x usabiliy

well cheesehead to make my point clear

-if you start firefox it does not say firefox 3.0.3 it just says firefox.

-program in ubuntu are renamed from default name (upstream name) to name that just signifies their purpose
ooffice -writer 2.4->OpenOffice.org Word Processor
ooffice -calc 2.4->OpenOffice.org Spreadsheet

-well these renaming have been extended to all launcher in ubuntu
gnome-dictionary 2.24->dictionary

well in all the above cases launcher have been renamed to a simpler name removing all unnecessary information which was done to reduce confusion (contrary to what cheesehead is saying)

->if you want to search word you look for app named dictionary not gnome-dictionary 2.24 this extra information just leads to confusion for end user
------------------------------------------------------------

Ubuntu is basically is made of many number of packages and the packaging is what makes it a really great distro. The naming of package would have been fine if it would have not been installed (8.10) by default but since it is it should follow higher standards ubuntu pckaging.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Now look at the plugin name
->libvisual infinite plugin plugin v0.1

1-in the above name plugin is repeated twice if this is fine then there should not problem with name

libvisual infinite plugin plugin plugin plugin plugin plugin v0.1

the above name is just used to magnify and make it more obvious what i am saying

2-seceondly in the new plugin name even the extra information is not provided in systematic manner in some name
libvisual is repeated twice
libvisual is once
plugin is twice
plugin is once

3-version number is extra formation it has no use for end user look at my dictionary example.This breaks the consistency with old goom-goom plugin which has no version number info

4-libvisual is extra in name but this also not consistent

GOOM:
libvisual

you will notice the one uses capital other uses small case.

there is a missing : which seperates the visual family name and plugin name
-----------------------------------------------------------

well this al leads loss in user time a thing which could have been searched in one glance has to be found from
crap of extra information and inconsistency

and before commenting and voting please try the Ubuntu 8.10 and see if you really feal that the plugin should be renamed

Shouldn't our name try to match the upstream name when possible? Otherwise it could get confusing pretty fast.

I don't think I understand what you're proposing...

If what I gather from cheesehead is correct and you're talking about packaging, yeah, it'd be best to convince upstream to adopt the names, and it'll come with Ubuntu automatically...

Ah, I see. Maybe next time, you might upload a screenshot to tinypic and post it? It would make things easier. (;
