Idea #13967: List of Hardware supported Out-of-the-Box on Ubuntu.com

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #40: Create a better hardware database.

Rationale

I'm planning to buy a new webcam, but I want to get one that will be supported by Ubuntu 100% straight out-of-the-box, that means no hunting for drivers and hacking a proprietary hardware if there is an open source option.

Have a regularly updated page on Ubuntu.com so that we can browse through all available options sorted by categories , ex: webcams, wifi cards, etc.

I like this I idea. Could be done by user submissions... something like osx x86's compability page...

Ubuntu should be actively promoting UVC compatibility with Webcams. That would make it generic.

But yeah.. true..

Auzy : I've read that the 2.6.26 kernel was including the uvcvideo driver, so we just need Ubuntu to use 2.6.26 to have that support. And it's the version used by 8.10.

Yes, kernel 2.6.26 have UVC (USB video device class) support. I think that all cams that have the "Works with Vista" logo supports UVC.

I agree with pepperpupper, a ompatibility list like osx 86.
Yes there's the hardwaresupport page on wiki but it has got only a few hardware...

excellent idea - this way - more linux users will use only supported hardware, i certainly do! and manufacturers would want to come into the list too, esp with thier popular products.
