Rationale
Nautilus should be one of the greatest file managers, and one of the tasks it should be able to do is mass renaming.
Thus, it wouldn't be necessary to install external programs and change from one to another to manage your files.
I would like this option to be available by default. However I currently use pyrenamer and would probably not go back to normal rename after using it. Whats more you can right click on any folder go to properties > open with and add pyrenamer to the available applications.
Usually I'd use the command line to accomplish this, but voted up nonetheless...it's the tiny details like this that distinguishes between a polished distro and a crude one.
I agree this would be handy; I use this in Windows all the time. Select files - rename the first - all following files are renamed the same followed by a number: (1),(2),(3)...
I also think this idea needs to be implemented by default, because odrinary users need such details out of the box and not wasting time searching for some script or use command line to acomplish it. After all Ubuntu aims to be a linux for human beings...
There are several nautilus extensions that could be useful by default; however, to keep the context menu uncluttered, all of the options available should be made visible/invisible via a simple checkbox interface in Edit > Preferences.
I'd like this... In many cases a system's file manager is it's main interface to the world and, good though nautilus is (it tempted me avay from explorer.exe!) it's not quite there yet.
Adobe Lightroom has one of the best file renaming dialogs I've ever seen. Even if you leave out using EXIF tags in the file name, it still beats anything out there.
