Idea #13815: Get rid of the default screensavers

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #4236: Less screensavers.
Written by BooBo the 28 Sep 08 at 11:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
They suck, and look really old (Because they were made for 486s). It makes Ubuntu look really behind the times. How about lose all of them (Except for 'Pictures Folder') and make some brand new ones, maybe one similar to the visualizer for iTunes 8 (The magnetosphere one, it's really cool).
It would make Ubuntu seem way more modern. There is no reason to keep them (Except for nostalgia, for the older peeps).

Getting rid of the current sucky savers is a good idea. Coming up with new suckies is not.

Real men use blank screen.

Its a dupe, but I agree, 4bit color screensavers were only popular in the Jurassic era.

Real men are out flying planes or parachuting, not changing their screensaver settings.

I want something like magnetosphere to. There should be a new screen saver per release, and ones that don't look ancient. And the 'pictures folder' should allow a custom folder to be selected, i don't want all of my random photo's being seen!

+1

@glotz: I actually use Blank Screen myself, but we still need new and refreshing ones.

i am a screensaver-fan. ( yes they still exist ) and i was surprised with the amount of default-screensavers available.

they need to be in everyone's taste. some people like an calm screensaver ( like pipes ) just for when the computer is idle.

others ( like me ) like more spacey screensavers with a lot of beautiful collars.

and other like energie-saving and do use a blank screen.

please ensure we still hold screensavers on our taste

Maybe one or two new... given how often people are actually using savers... the present 80+ collection is really too much.

Yeah really, make the screen turn off properly and lets have done with it. I wince everytime I walk past a big office at night with 500 machines all on running screensavers, save your electricity already!

deadowl wrote on the 28 Sep 08 at 20:26
Yea, turning off the monitor would be the best default for saving electricity. This should also be explained to the user when going into screensaver and power settings.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the screensavers offered. I use the plasma screensaver.

danielt998 wrote on the 28 Sep 08 at 20:35
I think that some of them are cool but maybe you could have an "old screensavers" section or something so that they aren't in the main list but can select them if you really want to.

Why so many default screensavers yet so few default wallpapers?

ubunteando wrote on the 28 Sep 08 at 21:49
Its a NONSENSE that they still dont get rid of them and use the space to put some new wallpapers and other stuff...

I MEAN ITS SO EASY TO DO AND SO MANY PEOPLE ASK FOR IT.

It really seems that nobody really gave a shit... It really pisses me off... Soon ill be another ex-ubuntu-user :/

As long as they don't take away the Skyrocket one then I might be happy with this.

I guess I can agree that it's fair to get out with the old, it's not like they wouldn't be available in the repository and you can only fit so much on a CD.

It would be nice to see a new series of completely original ideas in screensavers. It's a little frustrating seeing the same old flying toasters over and over again.

Some of them are quite good. But as a whole they suck.
