Idea #1379: Multiple file select in Nautilus list view through mouse dragbox

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #4371: Drag select in Nautilus Please.
Written by oencke the 29 Feb 08 at 13:17. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
Any other file manager is able to do it, so why not the one that is the ubuntu default?

It should be possible in the Nautilus list view to draw a box around several files and get them all selected without any additional keyboard presses.
It is possible in the icon view, why not in the list view?

I know of the keyboard shortcuts (Shift, Ctrl, Ctrl-A) but their use should be optional and not mandatory for this task from a usability standpoint.

I noticed that the file panel in Brasero has this feature.
I would love this feature in Nautilus, but it has to be intelligent :

- you should still be able to drag-n-drop files, without having to first clic on the file.

- there must be a way to differentiate a dragndrop from a drag selection

- Windows considers a dragndrop when you start your drag on a file, and a drag selection when you start your drag outside the filelist (in the blank area)
