On "what is Ubuntu" section of Ubuntu.com, all what you see is text and one or 2 pictures presenting Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Xubentu, ext...

That's not sufficient!

Clearly better, posting video presentations -along with text and pics- that explain briefly how the system works, most of Linux advantages, Ubuntu principles, showing how the system is too simple to handle.. ext.. in a very attractive way!

Just think "commercial", the idea is to seduce new users!

glotz,

I believe technical and financial possibilities must serve good ideas, not quite the opposite.

In this case, maybe marketing videos could be totally sponsored.. (to be honest with you, if I was chief of a web marketing company, I will size the OPPORTUNITY to make such videos for free, I mean look at the number of Ubuntu.com visitors! It'd be a huge "advertising" opportunity for my company!!!!!!!!!!!)
or, maybe some Linux funs could finance that (I mean billions of dollars are raised to support Linux!!!)...

cheesehead,

Looking for the best methods is totally different from "easier or cheaper methods"

Should someone in the community make such video?
Sure, go ahead. Have fun - everyone needs a hobby. Don't forget to maintain and update it. And include the basic market research to measure appeal and effectiveness.

Should Canonical produce such video?
No. A firm advertises to generate revenue, directly or indirectly. There's a predictable function of $ outlay to $ revenue, and whole careers in marketing devoted to those predictions. There's no retail revenue here.

I work in the film industry for a living, and the idea that these videos would be too expensive is a joke. Just how expensive do you think it is to have a guy stand beside a computer and talk about Ubuntu? Not very is the answer. It would require the absolute minimum in crew and resources. Any production company that does corporate films will be able to shoot this for next to nothing.

But if the idea of hiring someone to light and film a real person really is too expensive then you could simply have a screen cast with a professional voice over and a few graphics for transitions, titles etc. Something like that would be very cheap.

Cost is not really the issue here, its one of priorities. Up until now Canonical really just hasn't given a cr@p about their image. See this brainstorm for example:

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10980/

There's always a lot of negative people talking about "this is too expensive, or this won't work" but we have to do something to get Ubuntu moving to the masses.

In marketing, image is like 80% and quality is 20%. Ubuntu is a high quality OS but it lacks an image, in fact Linux has a very ugly image. Everyone that knows a bit about Linux thinks that Linux is for Nerds, hackers, it doesn't work, hard to use etc. We have to get rid of this image and start looking good.

For example look at what Apple does with Mac:
http://www.apple.com/mac/

Watch those videos and tell me if Mac looks cooler than it really is.

Now got to ubuntu.com and compare our image to theirs.

Which one would you choose if you were Mr. Joe Normal?

Which one looks sexy and slick?

Does Ubuntu look sexy and slick?
------------------------------------

I have a similar idea posted here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/14706/

It is more elaborated than this idea but it's basically the same.
