Idea #13623: Ubuntu look shoold be next releases priority !!!

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #498: Better GUI theme.
Written by litamus the 24 Sep 08 at 00:06. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Let's be clear: Ubuntu is installed with a good theme..
BUT it isn't as good compared to Mac Os X theme or Vista, and it doesn't reflect it's huge capabilities...

to be completely honest with you, this look gives new users a feeling of a rustic and old operating system...
-- this is what many of my friends (Windows users) just said when I convinced them to install Ubuntu...

-- just ask yourself, do you use default theme??? did you download some nice icon pack or install stuff like Avant Window navigator... ect...

* I like Ubuntu project, and this situation isn't acceptable for me!!!

I'm not talking about copying ideas from other operating systems but we must think of adding a modern and original theme with new nicer colored icons and better looking windows.. ect..

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, Ubuntu use must be much more PLEASANT, especially for newbies !!!

Just think "commercial", the idea is to seduce new users..
I know that, for "confirmed" users, this isn't an issue, but it's a vital one for newbies!!!

I completely agreeeeeee

Totally disagree, I tried AWN it sucked a lot of my screen's area. So to be able to use my PC i removed it.

-1, no additionnal panels by default.
the current orange style is quite good. It's meaningfull, it's not ugly...
Plus, I saw XP's theme, it is ugly because of the area used just to show rounded stuff, unreasonably big windows headers,...
-1 don't clone window's theme, it suck.(mac one isn't that bad, but I find it's not natural)

But emphase "compiz" at install, saying:
"I have a powerfull video card, please enable compiz"
Why not? but it's not in your idea.

Ubuntu targets newbies and "average" users, so the look is much more important than in others geek or advanced distros.

And copying ideas from other operating systems is NOT a sin. If the copy is better than the previous idea used we go forward.
It's off course better to have a totally new and innovating look, but if no one can come up with a new good idea, the next best thing is to copy other ideas.

who is using default theme??

I am, cause it's beautiful.

but having possibility to have several themes is good thing so

The theme definitely needs to be revamped. If MAC and Microsoft has flashy 'bling' then Ubuntu needs to out do them but on a sophisticated level.

Also when you right click on the desktop it shouldn't say change desktop but something a bit more all inclusive. Since you can do more than that.

backdoorangel wrote on the 24 Sep 08 at 21:49
At very least, NewHuman should be enabled by default with a decent matching wallpaper.

As it is, we basically have a glossy Dapper, it's time for some change.

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, said this:

"The great task in front of us [Ubuntu developpers] over the next two years is to lift the experience of the Linux desktop from something that is stable and robust and not so pretty, into something that is art"

Why aren't "look and feel like OSX" ideas merged?

borsook wrote on the 26 Sep 08 at 22:26
-1 While look is important, it should not be a priority. Compatibility/usability are more important.

litamus wrote on the 27 Sep 08 at 03:42
borsook, if you really enjoy the system look, solving a compatibility problem will be just fun..

cardinals_fan wrote on the 27 Sep 08 at 04:30
I think that the current default is already better than Vista or OS X. There are more important things too worry about.

haven't heard that joke before cardinal.. but it is funny :P

Look is a priority, but development tools need to be too. There are ways to improve the theme without consuming the ubuntu coders time.

kestal wrote on the 27 Sep 08 at 04:51
+1 for the idea behind it, but not AWN.

Not everyone loves docks. However, I think it would be a must in order to get ahead of the others. A new theme (or a few new themes) to be included.

Sure, the gnome theme is alright, clean, etc.. but it gets boring fast, because all other distributions with gnome are using it as their default, too.

I am almost 100%+1 positive that you can find a few artists who already have some quality theme packs, icon packs, and cursors, who would freely contribute in order to make the overall feel and experience of Ubuntu a bit more unique.

Some of the themes currently built-in should be taken out. I have not seen/heard of a single person using the high-negative themes...

Sure, we're not Windows OR Mac, but Ubuntu needs to stand out, too.

*newbies* likes to customize all. So they should be happy to change their default theme.

lsdark wrote on the 28 Sep 08 at 17:53
-1 just for the McOs/Vista comparison

orvils wrote on the 29 Sep 08 at 15:49
-1 for new panels or stuff like that,

+1 for giving more style options, more themes and more wallpapper options by default. I always install gnome-backgrounds and then start from there. I think including this package by default would be a good and east step in the right direction.

Here's my idea about what would be a great Ubuntu theme that combines some elements from both Mac Os (the merge between top-bar and rest of window) and Vista (transparency) to make newcomers feel familiar while at the same time looking much cleaner and different:

I found this image at the following URL (if you wish to reproduce it on your desktop):

cardinals_fan wrote on the 4 Oct 08 at 19:39
Instead of bickering over the default theme (which will never be universally accepted, since everyone has different preferences), why not integrate a customization wizard such as Pardus' Kaptan? Instead of trying to choose a perfect theme/wallpaper, just make it easy for the new user to choose their own.

erichmj wrote on the 5 Oct 08 at 22:41
I don't think the theme matters. It's still Gnome in the end and that is a drag that no theme can improve on.

ashokgelal wrote on the 6 Oct 08 at 03:21
I too agree that the default Ubuntu looks is the ugly at its best. After installing Ubuntu I often find myself referring to guide such as this http://www.quicktweaks.com/2008/10/02/ubuntu-810-beta-hits-beta-the-look-lets-t he-fans-down-again/ to make my favorite OS look beautiful. I just wonder what makes the developers stop from making Ubuntu beautiful by default. Ubuntu's default theme, wallpaper, and sounds are great but we are in the year 2008 not in the early 90's. You know what I mean.

jensfr wrote on the 6 Oct 08 at 18:04
If you favor another theme then just install it... as easy as that... seriously it's one of the easiest things in well most of the computer-world (even on windows, where you have to apply a patch first)

Leolas wrote on the 6 Oct 08 at 21:03
I think the look should be changed soon, that brown/orange is unwatchable.

I don't believe that the entire Africa is brown and orange -so stop saying that you have to use those colors because of the origin of the distro.

In the Artwork there are beautiful themes such as Dust ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/DustTheme?action=show&redirect=Artwork %2FIncoming%2FIntrepid%2FDustTheme ).

I'm not saying you should remove the existing themes -you could just put Dust (or any other NICE theme) by default and the old themes in System -> Aspect (or viceversa).

You don't need to work so much, to do it. There are a lot of nice themes in the Artwork section.

Leolas wrote on the 6 Oct 08 at 21:07
@jensfr

I do not agree with you. I know I can install another theme, but the first impression is very important. imho.

cardinals_fan wrote on the 7 Oct 08 at 01:06
@Leolas: Have you tried Pardus? It has a number of weaknesses as a distro, but the Kaptan wizard is something Ubuntu might consider mimicking. It provides a wizard on startup with options including theme and wallpaper setup. This would allow the user to easily tailor the look to their own preferences, creating the nicest first impression possible. It would also sweep the arguments over themes away.

I'm not much of a fan of wizards (we don't have many on Slackware :P), but this could be a good way to help all users get a desktop they like out-of-the-box.

Leolas wrote on the 7 Oct 08 at 17:51
@cardinals_fan

yeah, okay, but we want people to use ubuntu, not Pardus (which is probably much more difficult to use and has a worse support), methinks :P

Anyway, I know adults who like Ubuntu's themes, but all my friends and my brother's friends and my friend's friends (under 22 people..) don't like those themes at all.

Maybe that's the main problem...

cardinals_fan wrote on the 8 Oct 08 at 00:17
@Leolas: I'm not saying that people should all use Pardus. I'm simply suggesting that Ubuntu might benefit from copying one of its features.

I'm 15, and though I don't like Ubuntu's theme much, I prefer it to both Vista and OS X. If you ask me, Ubuntu should just ship completely vanilla GNOME. But maybe I'm crazy...

HaydenMicallef wrote on the 10 Oct 08 at 10:31

cubytus wrote on the 11 Oct 08 at 14:29
I used to live with older-looking systems like 98, 2000 and XP (Classic looks), and don't really find the default theme ugly; I do like the orange/brown, these are soothing colors, and I'm not over 24.

Having default transparency would be bad because:
1- it requires a graphic card powerful enough (even if it's a half-notch over integrated GPU)
2- Looks too much like Vista, which I find cluttered and unclear on the eye.

The mockup of What "Wood" theme would be is pretty cool, too.

I agree although it's easy to swap themes, it may be much more difficult to agree on a default one.

Priorities should be:

1. Hardware compatibility
2. Usability
3. Stability

We already have hundreds of themes and skins that can make it look like whatever you want. Looks are irrelevant. The reason people would rather use Windows than Ubuntu is because Ubuntu doesn't run on their hardware, and when it does, it's buggy, obfuscated, and confusing. Work on the user experience first.

I am a new ubuntu user and I love the fact that when you first install its clean, simple, easy to understand (particularly important when using a new operating system) and conveys ubuntu's robustness in an obvious way.

On the other hand, I do think that the Appearnace Preferences -> Theme tab -> "Install" button ought to work like the add/remove applications menu, in that it brings up a list of supported submitted themes for the user to choose from.

The theme on default install isn't TOO bad; but on a fresh install i have to admit i install many things to modify the look of the os.

A newbie would not want to try and figure this or that out until they already feel accustomed to the pc.

When it comes to mac and pc apps; they both have applications which the application "gui is more advanced", that is part of where we lose much users. It is another big thing that gives the os a "old" look.

The goal is to keep it incredibly simple but very pleasing to the eye also; many younger consumers are going to go and get used to what looks/feels like candy. They will also most likely keep using what they are used to!

Linux has apps that are widely available.

Linux has: The office suite; Gimp; an audio player and video player; a web browser... All which have no real "identity."

Nothing really 'stands out' it looks like a old package deal.

It feels like a square model car. It almost feels old and classic to certain users and plain old and dull to others.

Many MANY users will use a pc at home for entertainment: chat, music/videos, e-mail, pictures,...

Chat is VERY VERY VERY much used these days; you get someone a super pleasing (visually and usability) chat program and you've already won a bit more users.

The look, the feel; the "awe" !!!!!
