Idea #13389: When right-clicking a font file make an entry to "install font"

bug This idea was marked as implemented the 9 July 11. Available starting Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.
Written by pepperpupper the 18 Sep 08 at 14:58. Related project: Gnome. Status: Implemented
Rationale
Make an entry to "install-font" in the context menu when right-clicking a font file. The font would then be moved to the appropriate directory in the home folder. It took me a while to figure out how to install fonts!

Selected solution (#1): Auto-generated solution of idea #13389
Written by pepperpupper the 18 Sep 08 at 14:58.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #13389 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Selected solution (#2): install fonts by control center app, NOT Install fonts by right click menu
Written by pitwalker@gmail.com the 27 Feb 09 at 09:57.
Font installing is not a frequent operation,
this may be slow down the left click menu appear.
(like M$-WINDOWS!)
Currently we can install m$ core fonts by package manager.

I agree. I think having something like "Open With -> Font Installer" would be the easiest way of doing it, and would have the least impact on right-click-menu-familiarity

And uninstall if this one already exists?

Thank God someone posted this! Yes! Great idea for Ubuntu! And further simplify Ubuntu.

Right-Clicking on a font should *just* be a shortcut to a nice application that manages the fonts.

The feature should also be able to handle multiple files. So that I can select the files in an entire directory if needed.

Also allow to do it when selecting multiple font files!

Something simple, not to fancy, just does the job at hand.

why not just clicking on the font, I'm surprised Windows doesn't have that feature. I know quite a lot of people who try to install fonts by clicking on them ,when it doesn't work they give up.

Try going to ~/.fonts in Nautilus. Drag any font in there and behold.

Warbo wrote on the 27 Sep 08 at 16:13
bruce89: That has the same end result, but is completely out of context. Adding default and available actions to font files themselves puts them in context, even if it just a script which copies the file to ~/.fonts. This is a more convenient to work. It's the difference between having to carry around a toolbox, and having screwdrivers appear next to every screw.

Waited this feature for a long time. It is a pain-in-ass.

Implemented: Double-click on the font (instead of right-click) and it will install.
