Description
I've installed Ubuntu for a lot of people and one thing that everyone always requests is visible desktop icons to reach their Home folder and Trash. Currently, I believe, this can only be accomplished by launching a Configuration Editor via the command line (gconf-editor).
I would propose that Ubuntu's user friendliness could be greatly increased by showing these icons on the desktop by default (as is done by Kubuntu) or, at the very least, providing a simple method of toggling system folder icons (perhaps when the user right-clicks the desktop?)

Agree that this is a good idea. Both Windows XP and Mac OSX have something similar.
Make it relatively easy to remove the icons if they are not wanted (ie: right click->Hide icon) and also easy to restore (maybe via the editor for the bars on the top & bottom of the screen?).

I like it too!
IMHO:
- The desktop icons should be visible by default.
- Selecting an icon and pressing delete should ask for removal of the icon.
My idea of a possible implementation:
- Rightclick on desktop shows popup menu.
- Menu item "Desktop icons" appears.
- This menu contains the following submenu's:
- Checkbox "Show Computer icon"
- Checkbox "Show Home icon"
- Checkbox "Show Network icon"
- Checkbox "Show Trash icon"
One drawback is that you would have to open the menu 4 times to show / hide 4 icons...
Perhaps a checkbox option "Show icons" could be used to disable the use of all visible icons?

Why is this one in negative? This is a good idea, and should probably be part of the Preferences/Administration reordering in a global "desktop setup" with wallpapers and screensavers, or "screen setups" with the latters and screen size and stuff.

I think people like the 'clean' default desktop of Ubuntu - as do I. On the other hand newbies should have an easy way to get the icon for their home folder onto the desktop. To my surprise when I just tried to do this by dragging and dropping the home folder menu entry to the desktop, the whole folder begun to be copied onto the desktop :-o Perhaps this happened because I have my home folder on a separate partition.
