Idea #1315: Password protected auto login

Written by dominik.mayer the 29 Feb 08 at 12:11. Category: System.
Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Because the auto login function is not secure it's better not used on a mobile system. It would be great if there was the possibility to auto login and lock the screen. So all the settings are loaded but no one can access the system.

WHat would be the advantage of this proposal over *no auto login*????

You can *probably* do this by adding "gnome-screensaver-command --lock" to your startup programs.

Go to System ->Prefere->Sessions, Click "Add", name it what you want, the command should be "/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-command --lock"

Close, make sure you enable automatic login and restart your system. Do this *at your own risk*

While I need to try and add the lock to the startup, I'd love to be able to have the system logged in,but locked. In some cases when working remotely I need to VNC into my desktop at work and if the box rebooted, I can no longer VNC into it.

The advantage would be that you can turn on your computer, leave while it's booting and then just type in the password instead of waiting until it booted and then waiting again until gnome has started.

Using the screensaver only works if no one moves the mouse while logging in. => It's not secure.

If you have it so that it locks the computer on screensaver exit (bad wording, i know) then it should be fine. This is what the `--lock` should do in logfish's response.

idk though.
