Written by vojvodic the 23 Aug 08 at 13:24. Related project: ubuntu.com. Status: New
Rationale
Ubuntu website needs major revision. It lacks multimedia. You cannot attract new users with couple of images and text like: "Ubuntu Just Works"... Come on guys, you can do much better.

*Silence*

Uh yeah, there are those with slow connections.

I agree that there are those slow connections, but an attractive site doesn't mean heavy site. It's easy to make a light beautiful site. so +1

This is Brainstorm.
You should give the ideas, the WAY to do new things, and not just "this is not good, improve it".

Improve in which way? Make the site blue? Remove ads? Give the ideas :)

I suspect few of us decided to try Ubuntu based on the website.

We went to the website already knowing we wanted to try Ubuntu - we were sold somewhere else.

Bling on the website is a waste.

vojvodic wrote on the 23 Aug 08 at 18:25
Well, being on the website is waste, because website is junk and needs improvement. You voted against this, all right, website stays crap...

Flash on any site is a waste of bandwith... plus, the current site looks fine. I vote this down.

migueleonm wrote on the 24 Aug 08 at 00:25
It really needs more integration. integration with launchpad and with brainstorm. This should be the idea +0.

Yeah, site is magnificent, Pidgin's site is more user friendly than Ubuntu's, but who cares...

I disagree with the OP on this one. The Ubuntu site focuses on content, not presentation, and that's fine. There is altogether too much bling on the Web now anyway, animated gifs and flash and other crap. All it does in most cases is eat up bandwidth without offering any significant benefit. You can have dancing pigs, but that isn't going to make Ubuntu any better. And anyone who would use Ubuntu solely on the basis of whether the site offers dancing pigs is probably not going to derive much benefit from either the OS or the pigs.

Ubuntu offers some basic information and the ability to download ISO files. How much bling do you need for that? What sort of "multimedia" would enhance that, make the site function any better? None. It would simply eat up more resources without adding a thing to the utility of the site.

Are you kidding???

less is more.

if you put too much bling you might not be able to find where to find stuff, like the tax department.
