Idea #12398: Inactive Nautilus window jumps to top when files dragged over it

Written by steampoweredlawngnome the 21 Aug 08 at 04:48. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
When having multiple Nautilus windows open and dragging files from one window to the other, it would be nice to have an option to make Nautilus bring a window forward after a brief pause when files are being dragged over it.

Use scenario:

I've got one directory open in one window, and another directory open in another window. The directory in the second window has many subdirectories in it. I go to drag files from the first window to the second window, only to realize that the window covers the directory I happen to want to copy the files to. I must move the second window so the subdirectory I want is no longer obscured, or use keyboard shortcuts.

I'm not sure this should be a default, as it might confuse newbies, but I would very much like to see it available, even if its an obscure option available only in gconf-editor.

I realize that the newest Nautilus has tabs, but I think this would be useful nonetheless.

Isn't it a dupe of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2567/ ?

They are very similar. Similar enough, that I think if that idea were implemented, mine would necessarily happen.

I'm reporting this as a dupe.

So are there any dev comments about this? Useful features like this should not be skipped...

@sartrejp, when does the window go on focus? When the mouse (without clicking anything) goes over the windows or ONLY when drag'n'drop files?

This is indeed a dupe of 2567.
