Rationale
I use a Thinkpad T61, which has a built in fingerprint scanner. For the most part it works, but I'd like to see some innovations in this area. Windows is already ahead of the game here.
One example:
Once booted, I cannot simply swipe my fingerprint to log in. Instead I must first enter a username, THEN I can use my fingerprint to log in. You should be able to assign fingerprints to specific user names. You could even assign different fingers for different logins. Imagine your index finger being your default user, and your thumb being root.
May I mark your Idea as dupe of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/2/ , or do you think it's different (you mean just the improvement of not entering the username)?
Yes, until next year, when everyone has this "new, un-fake-able" fingerprint readers. And then suddenly someone finds a way to fake this.
Believe it or not, but security is far away from technical terms. You won't believe what great firms are willing to pay for security concerns and techniques, virus scanners, firewalls, VPNs etc, and have Admin passwords like "hello123".
I know what I say.
So better get a good password, don't mess around with unsafe things and don't beliefe blindly in so-called "secure, new" things...
Fingerprint shouldn't be used as password. They should be used as login.
ie : touch the scanner, you're then identified and must type in the password assigned to this accound.
I personally really don't buy into this biometrics hype. I think it's better to concentrate on the fundamental issues rather than follow all the nice things the marketing department throws at us.
