Idea #12286: Regions for Windows

Written by zephyrcat the 18 Aug 08 at 00:22. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
If you want to get a window completely out of the way, you can minimize it. If you want to see only a single window, you can maximize it. If you want to have it take up, for example, the left half of the screen, you have to unmaximize the window, then resize it, then reposition it. This could be a lot easier.

Solution #1: Implement Regions
Written by zephyrcat the 18 Aug 08 at 00:22.
Here is how it could be done:

1. Put a windows in a commonly used position.
2. Right click a small button around the minimize button.
3. Choose "Define region"
4. Then, you can always click that button and the window will snap to the position you defined.

Not sure, but I think you can do this with compiz (viewports?).

It's a cool idea anyway, especially since desktops are getting bigger - you don't have to fully maximise windows so much

This sounds like a mix between a tiling window manager (such as wmii) and the Compiz Shelf plugin.

You can easily maximize windows with compiz. Then your windows resize with one keyboard combination to the maximum size without overlapping other windows..very handy!

Maybe it could be something like the split browser addon for mozilla firefox. Good idea

It would be great if it behaves like the program http://www.donationcoders.com/jgpaiva/gridmove.html for Windows, that way one can exchange regions.
