Idea #12265: Add "Purchase pre-installed" to Get Ubuntu page

Written by DPic the 16 Aug 08 at 16:04. Related project: ubuntu.com. Status: New
Rationale
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu
The "Get Ubuntu" page should have a link to purchase Ubuntu pre-installed on machines. It should list System76 and Dell as international providers, and then provide a localized list below that. This will encourage computer buyers to purchase computers with Ubuntu pre-installed and help those already looking for this.

well the wiki doesn't even include dell (see http://www.ubuntu.com/dell )
it would be cool to see this stuff highlighted more, because it is a good option for some users

why are all people here so crazy about dell?!?

They should be affiliate links. The money generated should go to bandwidth and developers.

This is a great idea!

But please break this affiliate page program down further:

*Big name global manufacturers (Dell, HP, and Lenovo)

*Middle tier regional to global (System 76, etc)

*Local shops (white-boxes, etc)

*Individuals (white-box builds, repairs, refurbishment, etc)

Then each of these partners can "control" their own listing (much like posts and comments are done on 'Brainstorm).

For example, I have a hobby of repairing and refurbishing pc's that others are getting rid of. It's a small activity of mine to improve the environment (one statistic is a new pc consumes 2 tons of raw materials during construction - that not even "recycling" raw materials is much of an improvement). So turning bloated and virus infected WindowsWare hardware into shiny new Ubuntu machines is some fun - and having a good outlet through "the Ubuntu page" could help pay for acquiring more machines to have a good outlet for them (most are Ebay or Craigslist-bound now).

Dell is the only big name supplier who provides an Ubuntu pre-insalled option.
