Rationale
We need a tool in Systems->Prefrences maybe another tab in Appearance that:
- allows you to visually change the grid size and alignment for the icon grid on the desktop.
- allows you to specify how to automatically align icon (e.g. from the top left down, form the top left across to the right, from the bottom right across to the left, from the bottom right up)
This could also be a place to tick if you want trash, network, my computer etc icons.
I think this is a good idea, however the Gnome developers will probably feel this is too much configuration for the average user. Perhaps a new 'Desktop' tab in Appearance. Tick boxes for having Trash, Network, My Computer, Home, Drives icons on your desktop would be good, but they are in the 'Places' menu already so it could be seen as unwanted duplication.
Yes, great! Free change for the grid size and the possibility to select which squares (in the grid) that could not be filled (useful for using widgets, docks, just for the appearance or anything) would be very nice too.
Appearance tab with options of desktop icons size, size and direction of the grid, possibility of icons to overlap each other (current nautilus behavior), checkboxes of places icons on desktop and a possibility to reserve parts of the grid to specific icons (or blank spaces), so that user could have fixed places for his places icons (home, trash, network..), blank places for his widgets/screenlets/conkys and place where his mounted drives will appear. That would be really great!
