Idea #12082: Enable user interface that recognises movement via a webcam

Written by granadajose the 10 Aug 08 at 14:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Many computers have a webcam. Movement recognition technologies have progressed in the last years (as in the EyeToy series). However, no operating system has still implemented this interface with the user.

Obviously, this kind of interface is not precise enough to provide a detailed control, but could be quite useful in some fields. For instance, it would be a great option to control document viewers, multimedia players, multimedia centers, and it also has many applications in gaming.

As this technology is quite new, it could be a great way to provide an additional value that other operating systems do not offer. New users could be attracted by this technology, and experienced users could use it in the applications they develop.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #12082
Written by granadajose the 10 Aug 08 at 14:09.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #12082 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #7: Face tracking based enhancement of desktop/ laptop experience.
Written by kamathln the 6 Jun 09 at 04:10.
I propose detection of the presence of face in front of the camera to detect whether the user is actively using the computer. This avoids the major problems associated with presence sensing using activities of keyboard and mouse.

I had written an halfbakery.com idea article before I knew about brainstorm.ubuntu.com .

http://tagz.in/l/8bu/

It contains several ideas, of which some are already listed above. But there are quite a few which are unique. Especially the first one in my article which triggered them all.

When I added an individual enhancement request on brainstorm.ubuntu.com, it got marked as a duplicate of this bug. So I am adding it here as a solution.

Yes. It's time to do things that other operating systems can't do, instead of just waiting for Apple to do something and then copying them.

What we really need is integration of something like Freetrack or TrackIR 4.

That would allow full headtracking throughout the OS with a webcam with the IR filter removed, and a trackclip pro/IR LED.
