Rationale
Firefox allows tags to be added to bookmarks so they can easily be found later on. It would be nice to be able to tag other system documents such as photos so they can be easily found as well.
While searching for local files, for photos especially, the name of the file must be known, which is a pain for people who take a lot of pictures and don't name them anything other than the default P0812102 from the camera. Being able to add tags would make finding files much easier. (Or am I just a freak who loses everything?)
[EDIT]: I noticed that tracker allows tags to be added to files from inside the search window to any file. I was thinking that this should be extended to the properties window for files, so that you can right click on a file, go to properties, then have a place to type tags.
Nope, but F-Spot won't run on my system for whatever reason. It crashes a few seconds after it's run. It would be nice to be able to go to properties and have a tab to add tabs to any file, imo though.
Good idea, although I hope GNOME developers wouldn't make it just for photos; a system-wide file tagging mechanism would be nice.
I believe Windows Vista has a feature similar to this, and KDE 4.1 has a document-based tagging system as well. I don't know if KDE allows to search by tags yet.
For this feature to really take off, the user should be able to search by tags. Maybe I am being an idiot, and this is obvious. :-)
In KDE 4.1 it's named nepomuka and it is ....awesome...
there is multiple info on the file like tags or note but, also some description of the file like "who send it to me" or "where could i download this file".... there is already some search possibility but in 4.2 more features will be added....
F-Spot and tracker's tags are no good, since they only apply to the app itself. We need the entire filesystem to be tag-based, so that any app can navigate based on (hierarchical) tags instead of folders.
