Description
I don't want to modify always my ubuntu systems so they send their host name (and their client identifier) to the dhcp server. This is really nasty. Please enable that feature by default. Anyway it doesn't work with network manager 0.7. Workaround: manually set your MAC as Client ID in NM.

What are the privacy implications of this?

Does the DHCP server (hosted by my ISP) really need to know the hostname of my machine?

What good is it for?

I have never needed to modify anything.

For 99% of people, their isp wouldn't know their hostname anyway, because the router connects to the ISP's DHCP server. And I doubt the hostname being leaked is a privacy issue, after all, your isp can see all your traffic anyway ;)

I think this is a good idea, +1. At the very least with the client ID's, may help network management a bit.

I've come across this issue, it's annoying to have to configure on every machine.

Very big +1 !

For me it's very usefull. I need those hostnames to maintain the PC Database of my router. I distinguish each PC or laptop by it's hostname. If Ubuntu doesn't send it's hostname to the DHCP server (in my case: the router) I only see a list of PC's and laptops with hostname "unknown".

Random thought: one could use mac addresses as (part of) hostnames if they don't send one.
