Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
There are over 500 requested packages on Launchpad that has been confirmed as in need to be packaged for inclusion in the repository.

Some of these packages are very old, example Flock still hasn't been packaged, and it was requested a year ago.
Fedora Directory Server was requested 2-3 years ago.

We need more package maintainers. We need to recruit more package maintainers.
We need to make it easier to get involved in maintaining a package.
We need to make the work of package maintainers be easier and more efficient.

I've tried to learn a couple times how to package something. I don't have a very big attention span though, so I fail. :x

I will try again though! Thanks for the links Eldmannen.

Yeah, it needs to be simpler.
Not like read a book.

It needs be like 10 (max) simple steps, that anybody can do in just a few minutes spare time.

If someone could provide some sample source and a tutorial as a guide to building ones first package it would be easier to learn... Since many people would be compiling and building the same package problem solving etc. would become easy.

I'm going to spend some time later today looking in to packaging more, I had a brief look once before but since none of the packages on that list really appeal to me I don't know if I will have the motivation.

The culture of the community leads me to believe packaging is reasonably difficult.

We do need... what do you propose that we do?

Vadim P.,
Work on some solution that needs to making maintaining and creating packages be easier.
Recruit maintainers.

Yeah! Lets go recruit them.

How?

Don't forget to grab some bug triangers while you're at it, half of the bugs in Ubuntu are still marked as "new".

Vadim P.,
Perhaps on IRC, Ubuntu Forums, Fridge, UWN, Brainstorm, Launchpad, etc have a text or image (example top-right corner) that says something like "Hey, become a package maintainer!".

2 years ago i registered at launchpad.net almost 200 projects, and up to now, only less than 25% were packaged... There are lots of very good packageable projects are in risk of being abandoned...
