bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 8 March 11.
Written by dragoninsane the 28 Jul 08 at 12:06. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
add support for atheros wifi drivers in ibex
Just released linux wifi open drivers by atheros should be included in next ibex version which focuses on better wifi.
http://madwifi.org/wiki/news/20080725/ath9k-atheros-unveils-free-linux-driver-f or
The ath9k driver includes supports for the following chipsets:

* AR5418+AR5133
* AR5416+AR5133
* AR5416+AR2133
* AR9160
* AR9280
* AR9281
These should be available in ibex as intrepid ibex concentrates on better wifi support.

Doesn't this *kind of* depend on whether it is within the kernel that ibex will ship with? (2.6.26?)

I do believe that ibex will have these if the .26 kernel will have these.

Also I think it is bluetooth that needs more work done :)

Pretty sure this depends on the kernel.

Well, then Ubuntu should try to push the idea upstream (if it isn't on Linus' desk already).

These drivers will be incorporated in the Linux Kernel. Hope the Access Point code will be ready on time, as I want to use it as a wireless router.

I really hope this will be included in ibex kernel. I'd love to have out of the box support for my atheros 5417 extreme PCIe card. I'm building a custom kernel with this module in it; wish me luck.

This is going in my signature in the Ubuntu forums, to gain popularity.

aren't they already in .27 kernels?

NullHead wrote on the 23 Aug 08 at 15:02
Yes. I'm not keeping up with idex that much, what kernel are they using as their default?

I am actually staying with Hardy because of the wireless issue I have with Intrepid. I am using Madwifi drivers on Hardy and they are very very stable. When I try the same drivers in Intrepid, the connection is dropped from time to time no matter what I do. One of the main reasons I use the Madwifi drivers because of the ath9k and ath5k drivers are horrible. I really wish that this would be fixed quickly. This is a hinderance for mobile Ubuntu users. Hopefully Jaunty will fix all the wireless issues.
