There should be a button on your keyboard which does this. It provides a very solid and usable interface to its functionality.

xrandr does not work out of the box for me, and diddling with xorg.conf just to get tv-out working seems silly and a major pain. This is a big thing missing, and should be addressed. I agree with redfoxtx.

This feature is really needed since I can't persuade users to use Linux without knowing how to setup TV-out. Usually I make xorg.conf for them, but sometimes even I don't have a clue why conf file is not properly set and it takes me hours to find out why. At my position as builder of Linux systems, this things is the most time consuming and frustrating problem on Linux and sometimes it ends up I have to reinstall Windows so user can watch movies on TV again. Eight out of ten users I build systems for need TV-out. There's no proper detection of TV devices, there's no easy GUI way to set things up and this was promised to be made by LInux developers for years and still nothing. Really! What good comes out if I can install ubuntu in half an hour and then spend almost 2 days settings TV-out?
