Description
Someone needs to start a serious GPL accounting suite.
I would consider a decent accounting program for linux as one of the MOST important things since accounting is a major implementation of computing.
It would give a major kick to linux adoption if there was a decent accounting program available.
It should be as user friendly as quickbooks, sage, SAP , allow modules to extend the usability, import/export capabilities compatible with all major accounting software etc.

did you had a look at Gnu cash, homebank or kmoney? or are you more after a program for corporate use?
besides you name SAP and user friendly in one sentence... I've heard other stories :-)

Idea #480: Patch WINE for Quickbooks and Peachtree accounting

Idea #10423: sprinkle some spotlight on other software of professional use
Step #1: Crack the Quickbooks .QBW and other proprietary formats so we can import our data into GnuCash and other software that's already available!
How will we solve the Trust issue? Trust is the reason I didn't mind paying for the software: I trust QB to keep me out of trouble with the government, and to not lose my data. If a Quickbooks bug gets me in trouble during a tax audit, I can sue Intuit over the bug. If Quickbooks loses my data, Intuit has a support staff to help recover it.

I have sent a few packages to Launchpad for recommendation to be included in Ubuntu Packages. These will probably appear in synaptic in future.
Larger Business:
Compiere - ERP & CRM
http://sourceforge.net/projects/compiere
and
http://www.compiere.com/
ADempiere - Business Suite ERP, CRM, MFG, SCM, POS
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=176962
and
http://sourceforge.net/projects/adempiere/
Small Business:
jGnash - cross platform double entry personal finance application in Java.
jGnash can import Gnucash and QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) files.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/jgnash/
Point of sale Programs;
These may include business accounts systems, staff time sheets, customer databases, and discount specials, etc.
If you are a business, with many transactions, then you do not just want an accounts system - you want a direct feed from your cash registers to you accounting system.
Cut out data entry errors. Have up to the second reports. Lower overheads. Faster analysis, and trend spotting.
Sviw32 POS System (Point of Sale system)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/sviw32/
Mercator - Java Point of Sale
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mercator/
EasyPOS - Point of Sale
http://easypos.sourceforge.net/index.html
gShop - point of sale
http://gshop.sourceforge.net/
BananaPOS - point of sale

There are also some good programs available through synaptic. Try a search for accounting or groupware. Most of the kind of software that would be used in a corporate environment, is designed to run from a server. So if you want to run it on a single PC, then you'll need to set up a small server on your PC.
I had suggested in Brainstorm that a simple "local host server" installation be made available - which help small businesses to get started using the big business software (so change in package needed when the company gets larger).
But if you are a corporate, looking for server programs for accounting, them you may find something of interest.
