cheese2122, you're missing the point. The hardware is never going to be free. But Ubuntu is! That means the total cost of a new system with Ubuntu is going to be cheaper than a comparable Windows system. I know Dell already offers Ubuntu as an option on certain systems, but my idea is for Canonical to work with Dell to release a special model with Ubuntu pre-loaded an no other OS available. There doesn't need to be anything special about the system (although a unique case would make it stand out), but the goal is to use this as a marketing tool... Since the cost will be less, it'll be attractive to people who need a new computer. Thus Ubuntu gets it's foot in the door in the mainstream market.

Dell already offers computers with Ubuntu, and this is a great first step. The next step for Dell would be to push Ubuntu, and a special lower-cost system is a perfect opportunity. Realistically, however, I know the changes of this happening are slim because there's one major reason Dell wouldn't do this: Microsoft. We all know Microsoft would find a way to punish them, which is a risk they won't take. However with the new wave of low-cost notebooks running Linux, we're starting to see PC vendors ignore Microsoft which opens the door to my idea of a special system...

When Dell first offered Ubuntu Notebooks and Desktops, those where not much cheaper than an equally configured "Windows PC", now I get a difference of exactly 70,00€ for a DELL 530 DT vs. 530n. While this probably is the price for a Vista license (76,XX€ @amazon.de), I'm prone to believe that the win-margin is better for the Windows PC, due to all the "Add Ware" (Norton & Co) AND one gets more Hardware options with the Windows Version (which one may have to enable manually).

What I mean with this: The only advantage I see for Ubuntu is that it is more in the public's sight, though I doubt that my mom would click on "Open Source PCs" when shopping on dell.de...
