Idea #11372: support Nouveau project

Written by Jarvis the 21 Jul 08 at 15:23. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Nvidia drivers are not free. So for example, we can't install nvidia driver during the installation of ubuntu.

But there is a project to free nvidia drivers. It names Nouveau project :
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/

If you read the progress of the project :
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix
2d works but not 3d.
So how to help this project :
-Ubuntu should ask to make a dump and send automatically the dump to the nouveau developer after installing the proprietary nvidia driver.
see : http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/MmioTraceHowto
-Ubuntu could give money to support this project.
-Ubuntu developper should imply in this project.
-Maybe you have another idea, don't hesitate to write it.

Ubuntu should not give money to the project, but Ubuntu could advertize it.
Maybe when installing the nvidia drivers, give this as option and explain it.

I have a Nvidia graphics card, but now I have heard that ATI has released open specifications for their card, so in the future I will most likely buy ATI instead of Nvidia.

Ubuntu definitely will support them when the driver is in a usable state and isn't restricting anything.

bagano wrote on the 21 Jul 08 at 18:47
well i havnt plussed or minussed this, but i think ubuntu should move more in the direction of pressuring nvidia to release free drivers.

I'm ok with bagano, and did the same

Yeah and Ubuntu shouldn't help install the proprietary driver, force people to use the reverse-engineered nv driver and make sure no user can't install nvidia's drivers.

yawn.

Vadim, wtf was that blurp all about?

Same thing this idea is.

+0 I like the idea of prompting the user to test the drivers after installing Nvidia drivers, but I don't think support should be exclusive to any single project.

Endolith wrote on the 20 Oct 08 at 23:13
I'd rather use drivers from Nvidia. All I care about is that it works. I don't care if the drivers are open source. I paid for the hardware and the drivers at the same time.

glotz wrote on the 24 Oct 08 at 22:27
@vadim: so you think that the noveau project is about user subjugation? perhaps you should try some reading, o prince of the proprietary.

@Endolith:

I agree - but let's hope RMS isn't watching... ;)
