Idea #11306: openoffice 3 for 8.04

bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 19 July 08.
Written by stinger30au the 19 Jul 08 at 10:59. Related project: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
when open open office 3 stable is released can it please be added to 8.04

Developer comments
Ubuntu's policy is not to update a package after the release is out. OpenOffice.org in hardy (8.04) will remain 2.4 though as soon as 3.0 is uploaded to the current development release you can ask for a backport to be done that'll be available for people using hardy with backports enabled.

If it's policy then how did firefox get a pre-release in hardy?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Firefox 3 was in the RC stage at release, and was updated to final via a stable release update. The differences between RC and final were trivial. Had 2.x been included, it would have been impossible to introduce 3 via a SRU, precisely due to the policy of not introducing substantial changes in stable releases.
