Description
Display the levels of ink left in the printer cartridges.

This way, the user can know which ink is getting low, when its getting low, and when and which to replace.

Some conceptual mockups;

If the drivers allow that, I agree, this will be cool.

Exactly, this feature depends on the drivers. And companies like Canon, HP and others don't develop drivers for Linux, that's the fact.

Would be nice if USB device class 07h for printers could be used for something like this...

Would be nice with a vendor-neutral implementation that "just worked".

"And companies like Canon, HP and others don't develop drivers for Linux, that's the fact. "

HP does make drivers for Linux.
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/
"HPLIP is an HP developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux."

Any HP printer supported by the HPLIP driver can and does display the ink levels.

There is application that show that info for Epson jet printers. Don't remember the name though. It would be nice if centralized in one system application for all printers.

I agree...this would be a super cool feature! Personally I liked http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/8607/inkdq3.png best!

+1

Great another widget that wastes system resources and does nothing but tell me what I will know soon enough.

1 - I don't trust the ink displays on most printers, and can't stand how many now will refuse to print until you replace a cartridge that still has 50 pages left in it.

2 - When I see pages coming out of the printer that are wrong I will replace the appropriate cartridge, I don't need to constantly monitor it.

I keep my desktop clean so my focus remains on my work rather than being distracted by things like ink levels.

However I can see the value in having a library knows how to get the ink/toner levels of many of the printers on the market and could be used within other applications if so desired.

jhfry,
No this is not a desktop widget. It does not run all the time in the background. When you want to check how much ink you have left, you can do that.

@FuturePilot "HPLIP is an HP developed solution for printing, scanning, and faxing with HP inkjet and laser based printers in Linux."

Well, I didn't be able to print double-sided pages in my old HP printer. Maybe I installed the wrong drivers or so.

you an ready do this, there is programs in the repos to do it, about 2 or 3.

when you have them installed run them from shell with sudo infront of it so they work proplerly

my i865 works just great. i can see the ink levels and clean the heads and check nozzles too.

Hahha you can forget this feature in lame CUPS with basic printing capabilities...

gooz wrote on the 4 Aug 08 at 12:27
The command line utility 'ink' already does this for most printer models.
Maybe it is a better idea to have Ubuntu notify you when the ink level for a certain color is low, instead of having to look at it yourself in a separate window.
