Idea #11228: Provide straightforward list of hardware

Written by hurricanefloyd the 17 Jul 08 at 08:22. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I often submit bugs to Launchpad and confirm bugs that other users have submitted.

In such situations, it is usually helpful to the developers to know something about my hardware. However, I always find it very difficult to determine what hardware my computer uses.

Please provide a simple program which lists manufacturer and model details of basic hardware such as video cards, sound cards, hard drives, etc.

Have you tried lshw, hardinfo and gnome-device-manager?

Also, hwtest-gtk (System > Administration > Hardware Testing) uploads your hardware information to Launchpad. You can query for the information you've submitted at https://launchpad.net/people/+me/+hwdb-submissions and link to it in your bug reports.

I'd second "hardinfo" as a very excellent program that pretty much reports everything, and also can make you a tidy html file with the data. It's in add/remove.

Sorry, I meant 'lshw'.

That was suggested in the first comment. Please at least take a brief look at the comments before posting.
