Description
Every time I do online update I first need to install the ubuntu-desktop package with 400 packages to "ensure the correct upgrade" only to, minutes after the install, uninstall it again with 500 packages I don't use.
This is probably the dupe of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1653/ and others, but ...
I suggest that ubuntu-desktop promotes the upgrade, but is minimised to system and basic gnome packages that users *vote* on or are gathered by "preffered app" survey.

As far as I'm aware, the ubuntu-desktop meta package is only required to be installed IF you are updating to a brand new version of Ubuntu (like hardy/idex), but for general daily updates, it's totally fine to leave it out and the system updates ok...

Minimal CD is not what this is about!.
You still have to have a ubuntu-desktop installed if you want to "ensure proper upgrade" over the internet.

I see a bit of geek-value to non-ubuntu-desktop-dependent upgrading, but geeks already know the workarounds to do it.
But Ububtu is supposed to be targeted at non-geeks, and I just don't see any value in it for them. Just confusion and help calls.
There are lots of ways to implement this idea (scripts, custom package, etc). Do it in a way that won't confuse and frustrate non-geeks.

I agree.
The easiest way to do it is to:
a. strip down the ubuntu-desktop
b. make the system ubuntu-desktop independent
c. make ubuntu-minimal the preferred upgrade package
d. option to ask a user during an option to select the packages
