Include OpenOffice 3 in interpid

It seems that for interpid openoffice 2.4 is planed as the office suite. I use openoffice 3 beta 2 every day and it seems that this ab is very stable. So I propose that you include the 3.0 version or an RC of it in the final interpid.

They have made really a lot of improvements and everyone will benefit of it.

I know that you would have to create a packet yourself and can't just import from debian, but I would really appreciate your work.

It is quite common for Ubuntu to switch to an Release Candidate on the assumption that the final will be released in time. The OO RC should be released on the 8th of August, well before Ubuntu's feature freeze on the 28th. See:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease30

We had Firefox Beta in Hardy, which is a LTS release.
Ibex will be more "experimental", so it should be no problem to include OOo 3.0, ecen when it's beta.
BTW, in Sept. it will probably be even a Release candidate...
+1

This will help OOo a lot. It will expose OOo 3.0 to a larger set of testers, which will help make the software more stable. IMO, The sooner this can happen, the better. I also don't think it would look good if Ibex is released one with OOo being one (major) release behind from day one.

I'm not voting for this at all. If OOo is ready enough, they will add it without the idea. And if its not, you guys cant tell yet anyway.

We'll have to see closer to the date if its ready. I wont vote for this for a few months yet. sorry

lattera:

You've obviously never had a word processor CRASH at the very moment you hit the SAVE button, destroying not only the contents of memory, but also the file on disk, leaving you to rewrite the first 10 pages of your 30 page senior university thesis.

I have. KOffice did it to me. Open Office should ONLY be upgraded to 3.0 if 3.0 is stable. Office/work apps should not be unstable, period.

I'm sure if 3.0 is stable by the time II is released, it will be included. If not, it can be offered as a backport later.

Except that we don't know yet if it will crash every 2 minutes yet Kab. In which case, it may be useless.

Lattera. Thats different. The LTS release is meant to offer support over 3 years. And they couldn't support Firefox 2.0 for 3 years. LTS doesn't stable on release, it just means that it will be supported longer (and more stable over the long run).

None of us can make any assessments of openoffice 3 yet
