I think it will be included in the intrepid alpha/beta releases when OpenOffice 3.0 is offically released in september.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 is expected to be released in September 2008.
Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex" is expected to be released in October 2008.

Seems we wont get OpenOffice.org 3.0 in Ibex. :(
But I hope we will...
... or at least backports...

It is quite common for Ubuntu to switch to an Release Candidate on the assumption that the final will be released in time. The OO RC should be released on the 8th of August, well before Ubuntu's feature freeze on the 28th. See:

We had Firefox Beta in Hardy, which is a LTS release.
Ibex will be more "experimental", so it should be no problem to include OOo 3.0, ecen when it's beta.
BTW, in Sept. it will probably be even a Release candidate...

This will help OOo a lot. It will expose OOo 3.0 to a larger set of testers, which will help make the software more stable. IMO, The sooner this can happen, the better. I also don't think it would look good if Ibex is released one with OOo being one (major) release behind from day one.

I'm not voting for this at all. If OOo is ready enough, they will add it without the idea. And if its not, you guys cant tell yet anyway.
We'll have to see closer to the date if its ready. I wont vote for this for a few months yet. sorry

If OpenOffice 3 support won't get mature enough by the time 8.10 should be released, it's better to change 8.10's release date, since OpenOffice 3 is one of the most important packages

Since Ubuntu put Firefox 3 Beta 5 in 8.04 (an LTS release), I don't see why OpenOffice 3 shouldn't be included.

You've obviously never had a word processor CRASH at the very moment you hit the SAVE button, destroying not only the contents of memory, but also the file on disk, leaving you to rewrite the first 10 pages of your 30 page senior university thesis.
I have. KOffice did it to me. Open Office should ONLY be upgraded to 3.0 if 3.0 is stable. Office/work apps should not be unstable, period.
I'm sure if 3.0 is stable by the time II is released, it will be included. If not, it can be offered as a backport later.

If you work in the office and use OpenOffice on a daily basis, then you know that you absolutly need OpenOffice 3.0.
Reasons are:
- Increased productivity
- Support for new Micro$oft document formats
- Better print support
- Better pdf generation

Except that we don't know yet if it will crash every 2 minutes yet Kab. In which case, it may be useless.
Lattera. Thats different. The LTS release is meant to offer support over 3 years. And they couldn't support Firefox 2.0 for 3 years. LTS doesn't stable on release, it just means that it will be supported longer (and more stable over the long run).
None of us can make any assessments of openoffice 3 yet
