Description
Improve Dell's Laptops sales, through banners, mails, Ads.. also via Ubuntu website! (frozen news at june...)
And i think that other builders may get surprised and then "be cool", making a proper line of "Ubuntu"-oriented PCS

My network of Al Quaeda operatives voted it down.
We thought it was a bad idea.
Dell is quite capable of advertising their own hardware.
Wider public acceptance will come from providing software that non-geeks find better than the alternatives...they don't yet because it's not yet.

I think too that the best way for Ubuntu to gain a wider audience is to come preinstalled on new computers.
There are 7 billion people on earth.
May be about 1/10 are using computers today.
And maybe about 1/4 of those users are aware of the difference between Mac, linux and windows. All others could not care less.
This was just to say that we must stop thinking that the whole world is invaded by Windows.
There are huge free markets out there waiting for good ideas.
One course of action could be to design a system especially for women. It would not be difficult.
Womens requirements are much less than mens. For instance they don't mind about speed. And they do not need advanced graphics. Only colours are very important. Women just use computers for communicating with friends and family.
Then it would be necessary to cooperate with Dell in order to hit the right hardware design. There are rumors that Dell is already working on it.
Finally the name of this girl box should be choosen carefully.
Mama Buntu? Ubundella ? or Lenova -for the russians ?
By the way, this launching would be good stuff for journalists. I bet it will rapidly give frontpage stories all over the world.

One of the laptops that Ubuntu is offered on has brown as a color option. This should be a Ubuntu special...

@Kathaer System76 also sell Ubuntu preinstalled on all their PC/Notebooks. Pioneer Computers here in Australia also do the same thing.
Would you prefer that the Ubuntu site just become one big advertising/marketing platform for businesses?

NEVER have I seen a more generalised and derogatory post! Please dont make assumptions about how women use PC's...I use my PC more than you are implying, and probably know a lot more about the usage of one than a lot of men do. I also provide hardware and OS support the MEN I work with, who do not know about their PC's....Remember computers are ASEXUAL and they DONT DISCRIMINATE

I am very sorry. My idea was not to discriminate women. I just wanted to say that linux could be usefull for billions of people. All those who are not interested in computer technology. To describe that kind of people in a easy way I wrote women because the majority are women. But I know of many men also, which are just the same.
We are talking about marketing. My suggestion is that
Ubuntu should target all those people instead of targeting the existing computer market.

May be I should clarify my ideas above.
1- By marketing, I mean increasing ubuntus audience. Not making money.
2- Today in my country (Denmark) the government and administrations are implementing internet for servicing common needs. For example, you have to use a computer for paying your bills, for lending a book from the library, for making an appointment with a doctor etc.
I have been helping aged people who had got a cheap Vista-laptops without knowing anything about computers. To start with, we make a gmail account. It is the easiest for email. And it gives access to googledocs and picasaweb for 'advanced' users. Then we open the homebanking connection. Thats all.
It is ridiculous that such users are forced to load gigabytes of vista crap each time they boot.....

I don't want the Ubuntu site to become an advertising platform for business. But that's what all web sites tied to a "product" or "service" are.
To advertise we don't need banners all over the place. Just more visible links to retailers selling Ubuntu as part of a package.
Dell certainly aren't going to start advertising Ubuntu while they are still getting big bucks to recommend Vista. So it's up to us to do it for them. Like it or lump it big companies like Dell are valuable allies.
It's a big deal for Linux that Canonical managed to get Dell to pre-install Ubuntu. Now we need to capitalize on that win!
