Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
Upon finishing the initial install, a small slick movie clip lasting a few minutes could be made available as a icon on the desktop. After clicking on it, the option for the codec install could be offered. Upon finishing installing the codec, the professionaly produced clip could show all the features and such of Ubuntu linux.

A kind of introduction/promo for first time users.

This is a dupe of http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/4772/

But I know I have seen more dupes with higher rating..

I agree with this. Apple does this on OSX. And it makes an awesome first impression. Its why I always purposely set up OSX computers in front of customers when possible, because it really did make an awesome impact.

+1

it's not a dupe.. infact i voted down the other.. This is a sort of "Hey dude, this is ubuntu, take a look!" the other one was a sort of "Hey! Hey! Musiiiic! Daaance! Weird Effects!"

Failing this, an OpenOffice document explaning everything about Ubuntu, from history, through to using forums, how to set up #IRC to links to a whole host of Linux sites and magazines to help the newcomer on their way.

Even better would be a one page OpenOffice document explaining about a small website which will be the new users bible and have hot-links to everything in Ubuntu and Linux. Help, Magazines, Forums etc. By linking to a website it will make updating easy and the user will never have out-of-date information on their computer. In addition to this document, a small program under System/Administration entitled "All about Ubuntu" which takes the new user to the same website in case the document gets deleted.

Ideally both should be offered.

It would just fill up space on the CD by having a big dumb video.

For anyone who isn't clueless, it should be obvious how to use Ubuntu. Click "Applications" to start an application, and click on the X button to minimize the application.

Some people are too dumb to be saved.

To Eldmannen,

Thanks for your reply, but I don't agree. What about if the person is a total newbie, most likely he/she has no idea which application to choose for a particular thing they would like to do. I really think it will complete the overal impression of Ubuntu upon the first encounter. Just like Auzy wrote earlier in this tread. (I had no idea that Apple has this)... for those "power" users... they can just skip this into and go exploring immediately. But simple Joe... perhaps he would appreciate such a intro. (and the clip will not be big and "dumb"... nothing to worry about)

Eldmannen is right.

My non-geek grandmother figured out the Gnome desktop just fine without a video.

The Apple video makes you feel good after you dropped $1500 on a MacBook - you got a movie for it...but who remembers anything from the movie except the 'cool' impression?

New geeks installing Ubuntu want the tour, want possibilities. The current new-install desktop web page and examples folder already provide enough of that...geeks like to forge their own path when they explore the nooks and crannies and break stuff. Geeks often care more about the process than the data.

New non-geeks DON'T want lots of options - they want it to work, they want it to be uncomplicated, they want it to be cool. They want it to read their mind and do what they want - not what they said. They care about the data, and not the process one bit.
