Description
Ubuntu is a free software operating system.

Unfortunately some of the artwork is not free. :(
The 'human-icon-theme' and 'tangerine-icon-theme' packages are not free.

We should strive to have free artwork to go along with our free software. Artwork that is compatible with the four freedoms. Artwork that can be used in the creation of derivative art, mixing, improving, altering, modifying.

Purist values can lead to ignorance. I think its best to get a system that works. If we need some stuff along the way that isn't quite open source, whatever. What good is a free system if it isn't a full experience?

terra,
We do have a system that works.
We do have artwork. But I think that we should over time try to use free artwork.

The goal is a free system with a full experience.

I agree with terra. I couldn't care less. I'd much rather have a nice-looking closed theme than an ugly open one.

But then again, I use opera as (almost) my only web browser, have al the codecs and drivers installed, and play commercial linux games (and pay for them, too) :)

I forgot google earth, and picasa :)

Thank God in the beginning there were people who didn't think "I prefer a closed OS that already works than a free incomplete one" (GNU/Linux)

By the way, there are a lot nice open source themes out there.

I know, I don't have the default theme myself.

I "forgot" to even look at which license my theme is under however, I simply picked ip up somewhere on the internet because it looked nice.

I think with something like a theme theres a slight merit to it being free. And that is that you can do those things such as mix, modify, etc.

Not to mention that Human and Tangerine are but-ass ugly.

your blowing it up!,mole hill out for nothing.do u want clothes and toothpaste to be open source.

Eldmannen wrote on the 15 Jul 08 at 16:28
I moved away from Windows to get away from the proprietary closed-source hell.
I moved to Ubuntu because it was free and open. If I find something more free, I might be inclined to switch.
Freedom above all!
I am nobodies bitch, so I don't want to accept some draconian license to use a computer, software or service.

eragon,
I would prefer a theme that was both pretty and open.

paul21,
Indeed.

dragoninsane,
Sure. Why not?
