Description
I've been playing around with Apple Mac OS X Leopard and, although the system didn't impress me that much, I loved one feature that I'd really like to see in Ubuntu.
It´s call Quick Look, and allows you to view the contents of a file without open its default application.
This is great when you have a folder with different types of files (JPG, MPG, DOC) and you want see the content of the files quickly without open many applications (Eog, Totem, OpenOffice Writer in this case)
You can look how this work in Mac OS X on here, here and here.

imho it's not the same thing: picture flow (Coverflow) provides thumbnails in a nice way, Quick look provides the document full screen on a Spacebar keystroke.
Both are interesting additions.

I vote this up, because although my new computer loads everything VERY fast. My old one would take about 20seconds to load OpenOffice.

Don't make this default or at least give an option to activate it. I hated XP because it would try and preview HTML pages.
I hated Konqueror because if you double clicked it will open the image than passing the command to the default image viewer.

In OS X you press space to preview, double click to open. This could be done in Nautilus and Konqueror. Since Konqueror already has some "preview" function (thanks to KParts), it would be very easy to implement there.

Oh, Nautilus used to have side pane preview for pretty much everything and it was pluggable. No idea why it doesn't seem to be enabled anymore.

Oh, if Ubuntu had this, and maybe other really cool features from OSX, I would.. I would like get crazy.
I think the Ubuntu dev team should get a lot of inspiration from OSX (not stealing stuff and making it fucked up like vista of course)

I am not going to vote this down because I think that there is something that I am not getting... still I really do not see the point of adding an extra way of previewing pictures or videos. Aren't thumbnails enough? Does it really take that long for F-spot to load and show you the picture?

brunovecchi: It's not only for previewing images and videos.
With Quick Look you can preview text files, spreadsheets, presentations, pdf files, html files, and many more types of files.
And you can add plugins for other files that aren't supported by default.
The best of the program it's the speed, you can preview any file in one second.

@spg76: Ok, thanks for the explanation. I guess that it would come in handy if it is implemented correctly, ie., if it doesn't slow down the whole file browsing experience. I still feel that I have to actually try it in order to grasp the whole idea.

I'd like to develop this but I don't know how to start, I'm used in openGL but not in GTK do you know a very good reference page to start?

@BadChoice: I'm not a developer, but I think that you can find good documentation on GTK at http://www.gtk.org/documentation.html.
I'll ask some friends for other information about this and I get back to you.
As I said, I'm not a developer, but if you need any help with other stuff (like designing graphics) please let me know,

Consider moving the pointer over an image file or pdf and then using the mouse scrollwheel to make the preview larger.Then scroll it back down to normal size.
The preview would only trigger if a user turns the scrollwheel.
Might be better than pressing a single key.

This needs way more attention. Picasa3 gives Windows now fast image previews.. Its a long step to full quicklook functionality, but it is a step towards..
Btw, is gloobus going to be cross platform? We should aim to give it full cross-platform capabilities, that way when windows people see it, they will be like "whoa, what ELSE is linux doing thats awesome".
