Description
Currently update-manager is only able to automatically install security updates, but for most users it may be handy to get everything updated for there stable release without interrupting them. It would save me some calls from people asking me what that icon is doing in there system tray.

+1 as an option. We have it for security, lets have it normal updates too.

as an option yes!, but I don't want an os which is doing al kinds of stuff on the background while you can't see why, and what it is like i.e. Vista...

hspaans,
If your users don't know what the update icon is for, then why update them? For fun? Change the settings on update-notifier to put them at ease.
Give them security updates, but leave them alone to work until they have a REASON to update.
Geeks like the shiny new version, we love the thrill of undiscovered bugs. I update purely for fun: My Ubuntu 5.10 did what I wanted, and 8.04 is better...but not much better.
Non-geeks just want the damn thing to work, and don't care about the bugs or the new features they won't use. Updates can be a chore - a risk of lost data, ruined procedures, surprise 'new features' and rearrangements that add frustration.

How many people are going to change their mind after the first time an automatic security update is poisoned with malware?

This would be good for computer illiterate idiots. (My mother, my grandparents and my neighbor).

+1, but I prefer this option set as optional.

@cheesehead.
Like Eldmannen said, there are enough people who're not whizzkids and treat there computer like a television or a car for example. Also I'm talking about recommended updates and not upgrades like you suggest. There is a difference between them and it has already been taken care off in Ubuntu.
And about malware, that risk was/is allways there. But that is why there is now signature verification on repository level and hopefully also soon fully on package level. This should not lower the interest of distro-builders liks Canonical to invest time into SELinux/AppArmor and elfsign for example to close other parts of the chain.
