It is traditionally not easy for OS to determine where it's running, on desktop or on battery powered hardware.
This gives us many bugs, for example, I'm able to put battery monitor on panel of my desktop PC, which not have any battery nor UPS.

Ubuntu already detects if a battery is installed and shows the battery monitor. Why couldn't that same trigger cause the icon to switch from a desktop to laptop icon?

This could be an option upon install as well.

Just make an extra icon and make it manually-changeable

Even though it would be kinda cool, it's just not worth the effort.

Would it be of much effort anyway?

in your network places menu on a desktop, if it will keep the network place .. if one is connecting to a laptop and they will remember that the service may not alwayz be their.
