Description
When a DVD movie disc is placed in the CD Drive for the first time, Ubuntu should prompt the user with information how to get it going, instead of leaving the user clueless.
- At the very least, point them to Ubuntu's official playing DVD's text . It doesn't hurt, and it provides insight to them.
- Since Ubuntu.com has the info anyway, there would be no harm done by automating some of the process, and simply warning users that libdvdcss2 may not be legit in their country (and let them click a link for more information).
This satisfies newbies and advanced users alike (and people can still go about the manual method). And, the user is only prompted once, and only if they have popped a DVD in the drive. There is no reason why anyone should have to google it at all.

AFAIK e.g mp3 is non-free and therefore can be installed, but dvdcss2 is illegal per se - so this is not possible...
(at least that is what I know)

I'm not asking it to be installed by default. I'm just saying at the least, pop up a prompt that points to the ubuntu website, so that people know how to get it working.
There is nothing illegal about that

Auzy: in France, there is a law called DADVSI which forbid to bypass DRMs and css2 is a DRM... and there is another law which grant the right to bypass DRMs for interoperability.
To make it simple, DADVSI is the most recent and we suppose that playing DVDs using Linux is forbidden (but I think broking a DVD in front of the court because I can't play it without breaking the law and because they always complain about piracy and a lot of other crap should do the trick.

Did you actually read the idea ssdg. I'm not saying install it, I'm saying provide instructions.
Otherwise, Ubuntu should remove the instructions from their website.

@Auzy: I think YOU didn't understand US.
There is nothing said of "default installed".
It is not prohibited in certain countries, it is illegal py principle to use the libdvdcss2.
So Ubuntu can't say "hey, click here to install it".
It won't happen.
If it were just an option, this would have been included, just like mp3 and other codecs support.
But Ubuntu - and any other free OS CAN NOT offer this option (not even the option!) to install it.

I think Linspire did this, but they had to licence a software for it. That costs money ;-)
Maybe Canonical could start a fundraising campain to get money for buying the licence If enough users havespent money it would be possible ;-) - but that is against the FOSS principle...

No no, I understand you guys perfectly. What I'M saying is that you could for starters have a prompt that is simply:
------------------------------------
Ubuntu does not include DVD support
as it is illegal in some countries.
For more information, please click the
following information:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs
[OK]
-------------------------------------
I fail to see how that could be illegal. Its not included with ubuntu, and Ubuntu doesn't manage the medibuntu repo.
And, it clearly states that DVD support is illegal in some countries.
Its just better then having "Codec not found" and "WTF" when putting in a DVD disk.
Thats what I'm saying. We have jack all feedback to users why their stuff doesn't work.

well free or not, for ubuntu to be accepted by ordinary users, codec support will have to be out of the err live cd

I think the title of this idea should be changed to something like "Give codec information upon insertion of DVD", or similar, as (as mentioned above) the software will not be installed upon DVD insertion.

Good idea, easy to implement and well expressed on top of it. Don't know why some people flamed about it (did you even read the proposal?!)
+1 from me
