Idea #10958: Make Kubuntu as sexy as Ubuntu

Related to: Kubuntu. Status: New
Description
At the moment Kubuntu looks more like a bastard son of Ubuntu community in comparison to Ubuntu - just look at the site. And the same stands for the distro: no cool branded artwork, no impressive highlights - just things that could get ported from Ubuntu.

But by the time 8.10 is released, many great KDE apps should be released. Not to mention KDE 4.1 (which is supposed to be mature and more feature-rich than 4.0). Others are: Amarok 2, Koffice 2(which is also really promising, especially in terms of ODF getting real-life usage), KDE4-adapted versions of K3B, Ktorrent, etc.
So the point is, that KDE-oriented distros like OpenSuSE or Mandriva can seriously break through, since they are really working hard to deliver the best user experience for KDE-lovers. And Kubuntu should also engage in this competition.

So, the point is, that not only Kubuntu itself should get more attention, but it should also be promoted as actively as Ubuntu - so the site should be refreshed, etc. Kubuntu should become equal to original Ubuntu - not just a derivative, but a key product. Please, vote, if you want Ubuntu community to work on enhancing KDE support in the distro you all love!

Agreed. KDE is treated like a second class citizen in Ubuntu, even though it is a more widely used desktop. Not really sure why this is a problem...

I mean, I know the developers of ubuntu are more interested in GNOME, but it would just be nice if KDE were not treated so poorly.

And the way you wrote it will get rated down ("bastard son" etc), sorry - and this, at the end will drag the original idea down.

Not to forget - KDE is getting more and more interesting for enterprizes. Since Qt is a cross platform toolkit - better than GTK+ programs like the whole KDE PIM suite could be run under Windows and Linux.
This could be used as migration step in firms and should not be underestimated.

I would suggest anyway to switch to KDE for Ubuntu, but noone listens ;-)

+1... but once again this one will be voted down by GNOME zealots... I'm really fed up with the lack of support from Canonical. I wish OpenSUSE used apt instead of RPM...

droetker - "bastard son" is acceptable. And I don't think that anyone would argue that Kubuntu didn't get as much work as Ubuntu. I don't think that hurts anybody's feelings.
I am glad, that similar ideas have been already mentioned on Brainstorm and even marked as "in development", although I see no progress as of now. Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 is nice, but it's not really what I mean by "sexy". Until Kubuntu could be seen as a real rival to OpenSuSE in terms of user experience, the situation stays the same.
And I still wonder, why this idea got negative voices. Gnome fans? Why? I didn't say that KDE is better than GNOME, or that KDE should be supported better on GNOME's account. It's a question of providing a real choice.

OK, it's a dupe of a dupe of a dupe......

But I'm so fed up to see that KDE is not as supported as Gnome that I vote +1.

And I will vote +1 until "Ubuntu" provides it.

*lol*...
you're so damn right, yes.
And sometimes duplicates and nerding helps.
look at
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10233/
and the "bug" in KDE4.1:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154119
and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226427

If enough people make noise, things change.

@ilembitov - you're right, it was just my fear that this idea could rated down.
I am a KDE user by heart, and I like it very much - GNOME has very much nice features, but has profited much from being Ubuntu's standard DE.
And I feel sorry that they didn't choose KDE.

And, I will support every movement that makes KDE to be equal to GNOME on Ubuntu.

droetker I haven't tried Kubuntu KDE4 out yet. Have you? Do you think it's ready? I mean, I wanted to switch to it and provide ideas on enhancing Kubuntu 8.04.1 KDE4-edition, but still I need my laptop to be useable, after all)

ilembitov wrote on the 11 Jul 08 at 13:41
Oh, funny as it is, but they actually changed kubuntu.org appearance - just noticed. Wouldn't say that it's really great, although it's better.

ilembitov wrote on the 11 Jul 08 at 14:04
btw, droetker, I guess they didn't choose KDE, because GNOME was (and is) default in Debian. Because of Debian, GNOME was often viewed as more "FOSS-beloved" than KDE

droetker wrote on the 17 Jul 08 at 10:43
maybe, yes.
That was before Qt was released under the GPL.

I tried Hardy-KDE4 - and it lacks in many ways - but that IS the way it is meant to be:
KDE 4.0 is just for developers and people who want to see "into the future" of KDE:
http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20080710131440951

A few days ago KDE4.1rc was released - I recently installed Intrepid Ibex alpha with KDE4.1 - and it is MUCH, MUCH better than 4.0.
Still not ready, but with the Kubuntu tweaks a fine system I think, when it comes out in October.
Kubuntu want to integrate Firefor more into KDE as well:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Firefox3KDEIntegrationIntrepid

looks good for KDE4/Kubuntu
I think beginning with KDE 4.2 it will be the perfect system.
And while Miguel de Icaza is struggling with GTK+ 3.0 and the GNOME3 upgrade for the next 3 years, KDE could attract more users ;-)
