Description
I have some passwords stored in firefox, some in gnome wallet, others in kde wallet and so on and so forth. Does not make much sense to me. I want one general password manager that firefox, evolution, thunderbird, pidgin, gnome and kde hook up to!
Probably there should be one password manager backend and an API to it. KDE and GNOME then would provide a GUI for it and all other apps use the daemon through the general API.

+1
I started using KeePass and KeePassX to be independent of the OS and the desktop

One password manager to rule them all...
+1 anyway

Having a generic backend also means that they can be consistantly unlocked by the login manager, as opposed to after login (and typing the same password twice). So +1.
Another alternative is to provide a generic backend, that integrates with both Gnome's and KDE's for now, until all programs have migrated to the new backend

Keyring already has 90% of the functionality you are looking for including encryption and the ability to let certain applications have controlled access. What it is missing the keypassx like capability to be a real password manager (i.e. nice forms, better UI, etc.)
